Public Health Informatics Institute

Public Health Informatics Institute The Task Force is affiliated with Emory University.

The Public Health Informatics Institute is a program of the Task Force for Global Health, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded as the Task Force for Child Survival in 1984. Our mission is to improve health outcomes worldwide by transforming health practitioners' ability to apply information effectively. Our staff is composed of professionals in the areas of public health, healthcare, information systems and communications—all well-versed in the current and emerging issues facing public health. PHII is known for its expertise as a neutral convener of public health professionals and their stakeholders, transforming health practitioners’ ability to apply information effectively in order to improve health outcomes worldwide. Our work falls into three key areas of focus: requirements development, convening and facilitating, and training.

PHII joins The Task Force for Global Health in honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Alan Hinman. He was instrumental in All Kids Count, a program that expanded its focus beyond child health and became PHII. After spending more than 50 years working in public health, Dr. Hinman spoke with PHII’s podcast. Listen as he shares about his storied career: https://buff.ly/NPHc0Ab

The Task Force for Global Health mourns the loss of our friend, colleague, mentor and vaccine visionary, Dr. Alan Hinman, who passed away at the age of 88 on January 26. He spent more than 50 years working in public health and devoted his career working for a vision of a world without vaccine-preventable diseases, including teaching the next generation of health heroes at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health.

Dr. Hinman worked with and at The Task Force for thirty years, making tremendous contributions both as an advisor, during his full-time tenure, and even after he officially retired in 2017. He served as a Senior Advisor to the Center for Vaccine Excellence and as a consultant to multiple Task Force programs, such as the Health Campaign Effectiveness Coalition. He was also a founding member of the Voices for Vaccines program. One of his earliest projects at The Task Force, called All Kids Count, evolved into what is now the Public Health Informatics Institute. Additionally, he served as a member and chair of the National Sustainability Committee for the Elimination of Measles, Rubella and Congenital Rubella Syndrome.

Prior to joining Task Force, Alan was Director of CDC's Immunization Division (1977-1988) and Director of CDC's National Center for Prevention Services (1988-1995). After rising to the rank of Assistant Surgeon General, Alan retired from the U.S. Public Health Service and joined the Advisory Group of The Task Force for Global Health in 1996.

We will always remember Dr. Hinman for his smile, heartwarming stories, his incredible command of public health history, and--most of all--his tireless dedication to creating a healthier world for all.

In collaboration with Cal Poly’s Digital Transformation Hub (DxHub), powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), and with pilot support from Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Boston Children’s Hospital and the Massachusetts Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) Program, PHII helped create an innovative solution using generative AI to automate the classification of pediatric audiology reports. This system streamlines workflows for audiologists and improves reporting to state health departments.

As the coordinating informatics office for the CHAMPS program, PHII is energized about this partnership.

The CHAMPS Program Office had an energizing and productive visit to the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) in Potsdam, Germany, in October. 🇩🇪 Our discussions focused on strengthening this emerging partnership by enhancing institutional alignment, deepening collaboration, and expanding opportunities for student engagement.

We explored exciting new and opportunities, particularly how HPI can leverage CHAMPS data to develop digital tools that improve maternal and child health. We also engaged with researchers, faculty, and students working on diverse CHAMPS-related projects, ranging from antimicrobial resistance ( ) analyses and digital storytelling to AI-enabled maternal health solutions.

Huge thanks to our colleagues at HPI and the Hasso Plattner Foundation for their thoughtful dialogue, strong partnership alignment, and continued commitment to CHAMPS’ mission. We look forward to the future of this collaboration!
