The flu is surging in North Alabama, with local healthcare providers noting a sharp rise in cases alongside other respiratory viruses like RSV. Recent data from the Alabama Department of Public Health shows a 17% increase in emergency department visits for respiratory illnesses, predominantly driven by influenza, while the CDC reports Alabama among states with very high flu activity levels. Nationally, seasonal flu remains elevated, with emergency department visits for RSV notably high—especially among infants under one year old.
At Whitfield Family Practice, we’re seeing this trend firsthand and want to help our community stay protected and healthy.
The CDC emphasizes that staying up to date on vaccinations is one of the most effective ways to guard against severe illness from flu, RSV, and related viruses.
We strongly recommend consulting your healthcare provider first to discuss flu shots (recommended annually for everyone 6 months and older), RSV immunization options for eligible infants, young children, pregnant individuals, and high-risk adults, and any other preventive measures tailored to your family’s needs.
Here are some practical, everyday tips to reduce the spread and protect your loved ones:
• Practice excellent hand hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use hand sanitizer when soap isn’t available.
• Cover coughs and sneezes: Use a tissue or your elbow, and dispose of tissues immediately.
• Clean and disinfect: Regularly sanitize high-touch surfaces like doorknobs, phones, and countertops.
• Improve indoor air quality: Open windows for fresh air when weather allows, run exhaust fans, change HVAC filters every 3 months, and consider using HEPA air purifiers.
• Shift activities outdoors: Whenever possible, move gatherings or playtime outside to lower transmission risk.
• Stay home when sick: If you or your family members have fever, cough, body aches, or other symptoms, rest at home to avoid spreading illness to others.
Your health is our priority at Whitfield Family Practice. If you’re experiencing symptoms or have questions about vaccinations, testing, or treatment, please reach out to schedule an appointment. We’re here to support you and your family through this respiratory season.
Stay well, North Alabama! 💙
