While minimalist shoes certainly aren’t a requirement and aren’t feasible for everyone, research increasingly shows that the foot itself *when strong and mobile* is better at managing load than any artificial support (AKA shoes or insoles).
But how do you know if you have the strength and mobility required for minimalist shoes?
Before you make the transition, make sure you have these 3 things:
1. Adequate ankle and foot mobility - If you don’t have the motion, your body will steal it from somewhere else.
2. Intrinsic foot strength - Can you control your toes? Can you do toe yoga without cramping immediately? Minimalist shoes expose weakness fast.
3. Single leg balance with eyes open and closed - If you can’t control your body barefoot and still, adding speed and load isn’t step one.
Build the capacity first, then transition gradually. Your feet (and your body) will thank you!
