Our MLKJr community service camp with yesterday was so special. We discussed how we are all connected and we care for all living beings.
-We practiced communicating and working with people who we didn't know with some partner yoga.
-We read "We Are Connected" by Gabi Garcia.
-Our activity was building care kits for those who are in need.

Each bag contained an emergency blanket, socks, hand warmers, sanitization wipes, toiletries, a variety of snacks, electrolytes, water, and a personalized note expressing love and peace to all.

I heard kids of all ages tell stories of how they have watched their parents help others in need. Our kids are watching and listening. 💜

May we all be generous. 🙏

This beautiful group of humans on this beautiful weekend learned and diacussed inclusion and diversity (and a little self love)! Our story was called and our take home message included these points:

Know your own stripes

Love your own stripes

Recognize others stripes

Embrace and love all stripes

Without your stripes, you would not be YOU 

Without their stripes, they would not be THEM. Sometimes its a package deal!

Honor and respect all stripes (even the things that are hard for them/us)

If we cant identify and love *all* of our own stripes, then how on Earth can we love the whole person in others?

*We.Are.Not.Our.Thoughts*

Last weekend with KindTreeKids was not only beautiful weather but a very beautiful topic that reminds us we are so much more than those pesky, unhelpful thoughts. We learned to acknowledge those unwanted thoughts, offer it just enough space to say "oh hello there" and then let it go. This gives us more room for gathering helpful and wanted thoughts.

It's so easy to forget that these unhelpful thoughts are so often untrue and won't matter tomorrow...even though they feel so alive and loud in our minds! This is our friendly reminder that we can build skills to develop the agency of how to respond to ALL of our thoughts.

What a wonderful weekend we had as we learned about managing frustrations. I think it's pretty profound to read over these lists generated by kids ages 11 and under (!!!) in terms of what anger looks and feels like on the inside and outside. And then to really shine, they shared the ways in which they can find their calm. I have always said, awareness is the first and most important step and these kids are showing sophisticated awareness. Even if they arent finding those tools in the moment, I want us to reflect on our current adult lives and remember that we *also* don't always access the tools in the moment. It's a journey. And they're working hard to build awareness to catch the "flames" before it grows into a big 🔥! We can imagine that we are firefighters and use our tools as the 💧 to help keep the anger (flames) managed. May we all access our inner firefighters 🚒!!!

We kicked off Social Saturdays and Sundays last weekend exploring the question: helpful or harmful?

We have a CHOICE! Finding that tiny pause before we make the choice, is honestly, the hardest part. BUT we can practice streeeeetcccchiiinnng the space between our initial sensation/experience and our responses. 

STOP ----  THINK ---- ACT

Ask ourselves: 

Are my thoughts/words/actions helpful or harmful? 

Will my thoughts/words/actions be helpful for EVERYONE involved?

What would happen if EVERYONE made this choice?

Will my thoughts/words/actions make things better or worse?

These sweet little birds were having the most fun this last beautiful weekend as we learned about understanding and managing DISAPPOINTMENT. We discovered that using flexible thinking, we can use FLEXIBLE EXPECTATIONS when our original plan or hope changes.
We were reminded that:
1. Disappointment is temporary (thank goodness, or we would be dragging our feet and sulking forever!)
2. Things happen that we cannot control.

These are those little reminders to shift our mindset and practice letting go of the things we think need to be a certain way.

A lesson for all of us!

Pause to CELEBRATE!

Remember that taking the moment to notice even the smallest moments of your children working together in some/any/the tiniest (!!) capacity is worth the energy.  Highlighting the things that contribute positively to the family dynamic goes much further than pointing out how they are/can disrupt the family's experiences.  Sometimes we see what is happening, and because we *expect* it to be that way, we don't think we need to comment on it ...but it's just the opposite. I try to spend MUCH more time on celebrating the attempts and actions that I want to see more of! This part is simple and easy (and connecting), but it's often overlooked.  Try to shift the focus on this and see if you notice any shifts in attitudes!

Our Tiny KindTreeKids practiced all the "things" and "ways" we can share. We learned that sharing helps us get along with others, we can trade, we can divide things, we can take turns, and we can practice waiting. We can share things we know, we can share our time, we can share our listening and attention. We talked about how sharing can make us feel good. We also talked about the times when we don't feel like sharing or others won't share with us! Here are some great tools for navigating sharing:

1. Say what you want to play with.

2. Wait for an answer.

3. If they say yes, say thanks! If they say no, ask when it can be your turn and wait.

We practiced this multiple times in our small group work and modeled the words to use and talked through ideas of ways to share things that sometimes feel really hard to share. We reminded the kids that when they relinquish something that does not mean that they will never get to do that activity, have that toy, or experience the joy again (impermanence in its most primitive form!). In the moments of genuine generosity and sharing that did occur, we celebrated and highlighted how those altruistic actions impact others in such a heart-opening way

Our topic for February Social Saturday/Sunday with was

*Reacting vs. Overreacting*

We were reminded that when we get frustrated, we have to pause using patience to help us see the different perspectives in order to determine our reaction to the problem. Sometimes things *feel* like they're a bigger problem than they actually are, and we have to make sure we match the problem with our reaction. We had so many great examples and ideas of ways to address problems with a healthy response instead of overreacting!

Next month is all about cooperating (aka intrinsic helping!) And we can't wait to see you then!
