Riverside was proud to have President & CEO Vic DiGravio represent our organization and speak at last week's DMH Rental Subsidy Program budget briefing at the Massachusetts State House.

This program pairs rental vouchers with community-based services so people living with mental illness can maintain stable housing, stay engaged in treatment, and work toward lasting recovery. With the program paused since July 2025 and vouchers steadily being lost to attrition, the call for action is urgent.

Thank you to the Massachusetts Association for Mental Health, Senator Jamie Eldridge, and Representative Sean Garballey for hosting this important briefing — and to our partners at Advocates, Inc., Bay Cove Human Services, and Vinfen for adding their voices. Collective advocacy is how change happens. We're grateful to be part of these conversations and are hopeful that Massachusetts will continue to invest in the housing solutions that give people the stability they need to move forward.

Yesterday, we were proud to celebrate two of our own at the Massachusetts Coalition for Su***de Prevention (MCSP) Leadership in Su***de Prevention Awards at the Massachusetts State House.

Congratulations to Larry Berkowitz and Jim McCauley, co-founders of Riverside Trauma Center, on receiving Lifetime Achievement Awards in recognition of their longstanding contributions to su***de prevention and postvention.

Debbie Helms of Samaritans of Merrimack Valley spoke to the impact of both honorees' work. Tamiya McAuley — whose decision to pursue her MSW was influenced by Jim's mentorship — accepted his award and read his remarks. Larry received his award in person, joined by his family and colleagues from the Riverside Trauma Center team.

In his remarks, Larry took a moment to address state legislators in attendance, highlighting the importance of funding the 2014 Massachusetts law (M.G.L. c. 71, § 95), which established a framework for su***de prevention training for school staff but has not been funded or fully implemented statewide. He also encouraged clinicians to advocate within their licensing boards and professional organizations to make su***de assessment and prevention training a standard part of graduate education.

Thank you to Acting Massachusetts Department of Mental Health Commissioner Beth Lucas, Massachusetts Department of Public Health Commissioner Robbie Goldstein, and all who attended. Congratulations, Larry and Jim, on this well-deserved recognition. ***dePrevention

Last week, Riverside Early Head Start in Somerville hosted a Community Baby Shower — and what a celebration it was!

We were honored to welcome Representative Marjorie Decker from Cambridge, a proud Head Start alumna, who spoke movingly about her own childhood experience and left our families feeling truly inspired. She even decorated a onesie and gifted it to one of our parents!

We were also joined by the Somerville Family Learning Collaborative (SFLC) and the Massachusetts WIC Nutrition Program, which provided valuable resources to attendees. Families enjoyed onesie decorating, a raffle, and received important information on oral health during pregnancy, mental health, safe sleep, and nutrition.

We have immediate openings in our free home visiting program for pregnant families and children from birth to age 3 in Somerville, Cambridge, and Medford. Visit https://ow.ly/RjBR50YuPHe to learn more.

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month — and Riverside is proud to highlight a program built by and for the families who show up every day.

Our Family Leadership Program provides education, advocacy training, and leadership development for parents and caregivers of individuals eligible for DDS services. What makes it unique: all training and mentoring is led by fellow family caregivers with firsthand experience — people who know this journey from the inside.

The program serves two regions — Metro and Northeast — and is offered as a free annual series of weekend sessions throughout the year. Topics focus on best practices, building a vision for your loved one's future, and developing the skills to advocate at the local and state level.

If your family member is eligible for DDS services, this program is for you — free of charge, and open to all ages and disabilities.
