It's that time of year! Gatherings, celebrations, and sharing are in full swing. While this is a wonderful time for many, it rarely comes without stressors, and often revolves around food in social settings. Whether you're working hard to eat clean in an indulgent friend group, or treating yourself amongst strict loved-ones, there's no need to let judgment prevent you from enjoying what YOU choose to put on YOUR plate. Here are a few of my favorite one-liners to shut down the "food police" (and maybe provoke a little mindfulness in the process!)
- Oh, thanks for looking out for me! Speaking of health, I’ve been focusing on …(or) feeling great about… (now share something positive about how you are feeling, unrelated to food. sleep, activity, energy levels etc)
- Just smile, make eye contact and say nothing. Let them sit with the uncomfortable energy they created.
- I love the way I'm feeling right now/I'm really enjoying this dish, thanks for checking in!
- Well I'm glad you and I can both eat what we enjoy!
- I’m so excited about what’s on my plate right now — everybody’s food looks great! Let’s dig in!
- That feels hurtful, not helpful. I thought you might want to know.
- My body my business! (then change the subject)
- Luckily you don’t have to eat it!
I am wishing everyone a season of strong health and ease, happiness and release from any stressors. This is your time, your body, and your life. Soak up what brings you joy, and be sure to nourish your needs along the way!
