In small amounts, stress can be an important stimulant.

But when pressure becomes an integral part of our lives, we can feel sick, unhappy and anxious.

Long-term stress ends up harming and damaging the organs and weakening the immune system.

Stress is commonly treated with the use of medications, which in turn usually lead to several side effects.

But did you know that acupuncture is an effective, safe and totally drug-free treatment for stress symptoms?

In practice, few patients come to me to treat stress. What happens is that the person goes for another reason and, after a while in treatment, notices a feeling of well-being that he did not used to and concludes that he was stressed.

Acupuncture acts via the nerve path, so practically all needle applications lead to the release of substances like endorphins and serotonins, which have calming and antidepressant powers. In these cases, the stress goes away as a result of curing another problem.

And if you still think that acupuncture is painful and scary because it involves needles, know that in reality, most patients relax so much during the session that they even doze.

Each session is a stress-free program in itself!

The debate over the use of face masks, on the other hand, has almost as long as the pandemic.

Bill Hanage, an epidemiologist at Harvard, says that "we are trying to build the plane while we are flying it". Unfortunately, this is the situation. And it is the dread of scientists, who are needing to make decisions with huge consequences in the absence of secure data.

After all, wear masks or not?

For WHO, the mask is not seen as a reliable protection and so far does not recommend its use by the general population.

However, the CDC has already recommended the use of masks by all people in public.

Recently, some European countries, such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria are beginning to adopt them.

In Asian countries like China and South Korea, people were encouraged to wear masks and they were widely distributed.

So, what has changed?

Maybe because many people have the virus and do not show symptoms. Currently it is difficult to know what the proportion is, but it is not negligible.

Another reason is behavioral: when we are wearing masks we remember that we should not touch the face.
But the main issue is the use of the mask shows that you are aware of what is happening, that you are concerned about the people around you and that if we all use it, it can be a way to emphasize all the other precautions that we are taking.

Is the mask perfect? No, it's not. But it helps.

However, to use them safely, there are essential precautions:

- Wash your hands before and after touching the mask

- Don't put your hand on the mask and don't keep adjusting its position on the face

- Do not use disposable masks more than once

- Do not use wet masks

- Remove and dispose correctly

But be careful: using the mask incorrectly (handling it with your hands all the time, not replacing a disposable mask or simply putting it on, for example) can end up being more harmful than not wearing a mask at all.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, most Chinese hospitals began to apply Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as an adjunct to conventional therapies and are documenting the cases.

Obviously there has not yet been enough time for research and scientific articles specifically on the subject.

However, TCM has centuries-old methods for reducing fevers and other symptoms of viruses and flu forms and I have had the satisfaction of helping many patients at Jade Wellness through acupuncture.

Let's wait for what science will show us (when the chaos passes, I think!).

Vitamin D plays a number of different roles in the body - bone health, cancer prevention, blood pressure, muscle function, etc. -, but one of its main contributions is to the immune system πŸ‘Ύ.

However, how to increase the levels of Vitamin D in your metabolism?

Vitamin D can come from three potential sources: sun exposure β˜€, nutritional sources 🍽 and supplements πŸ’Š.

In nature, only fatty fish 🐠 and some types of mushrooms πŸ„ contain relevant amounts of one of the two main forms, cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) or ergocalciferol (vitamin D2).

In the United States foods like milk and yogurt (animal and vegetable) are authorized by the FDA to add vitamin D to its composition πŸ₯›.

Of course, we can supplement our diet with vitamin D.

But beware 🚨: there is no consensus on the ideal level, in particular a safe upper level. While the tolerable upper daily limit given by the Endocrine Society is 10,000 IU, the most conservative Institute of Medicine in the United States considers supplementation of up to 4,000 IU/day safe and the European Food and Safety Authority recommends staying below 4,000 IU/day .

That is, consult a specialist πŸ—£ before taking capsules and more capsules πŸ’ŠπŸ’Š.

The good news is that in humans, vitamin D is mainly synthesized in the skin after sun exposure β˜€, while only a minor part is derived from dietary sources.

For us residents of sunny Florida this can be incredibly simple πŸ€Έβ€β™€οΈπŸ€Έβ€β™€οΈ. Studies indicate that 15 minutes of unprotected sun exposure daily, between 10 am and 3 pm are sufficient.

And how to find a medium point for sun exposure that gives us enough vitamin D without significantly increasing the risk of premature aging, burns and cancer? πŸ’

Some research indicates that we need little exposed area for the synthesis of vitamin D through the sun. One option is to switch between unprotected areas and limit exposure to the necessary 15 minutes.

Much remains to be investigated, but let us wait (in the sun) for answers from science πŸ–.
