As we celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, March 21 also marks World Down Syndrome Day — a day dedicated to celebrating the lives, contributions, and achievements of people with Down syndrome while promoting equal opportunities and inclusion for all.
This year’s theme, “Together Against Loneliness,” reminds us how important connection and belonging are in every community.
One way we can all promote inclusion is by using person-first language and recognizing individuals for who they are, not just their diagnosis. True inclusion means more than simply being present in schools, workplaces, or community spaces — it means being welcomed, valued, and actively involved.
Each of us can help create that kind of community. Invite someone into a conversation, include them in a game or activity, and speak up when you see exclusion.
The answer is real inclusion — building meaningful friendships, strong relationships, and ensuring everyone feels valued and that they belong.
Loneliness is a challenge we can overcome, and by working Together Against Loneliness, we can create communities where everyone is connected, included, and supported.
