We've been a little quiet lately, but that's also because we've been seeing a shift of people doing the right thing by washing up, backing up and masking up.

We won't win overnight, but we believe progress is being made toward beating this virus and taking our communities back.

Our leaders are also doing a great job in working to provide more testing to our residents. This drive-up testing site at the Volusia County Fairground is having a soft opening today and is one of a handful in the state.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management will offer COVID-19 testing beginning Friday, Aug. 14, at the Volusia County Fair Grounds, 3150 E. New York Ave., DeLand. Testing will be available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Tuesdays. The drive-up site will provide both viral and antibody testing. Appointments for viral testing can be made online at www.doineedacovid19test.com/. Learn more at http://ow.ly/zItt50AWUpF.

Pretty simple y’all.

Wash up. Back Up. Mask Up.

The novel coronavirus pandemic has now killed more than 600,000 people worldwide and over 14.4 million people across the globe have been diagnosed with COVID-19.

The data is out there that shows doing simple things like washing up, backing up and masking up work.

Let's set aside our own beliefs about the world for a minute and assume masking up alone works.

What if you were told that all we collectively had to do is wear a mask for two months straight in exchange for a decent chance to have our lives back?

Sure the virus wouldn't be eradicated but we could watch sports in person, our kids could go to school again, we could go to church, we could go to concerts, visit festivals, hug a friend, have a cold one at a local watering hole or whatever you used to do in your daily lives.

Would you do it?

CDC Director Robert Redfield told JAMA mask wearing is key because "there is ample evidence" that asymptomatic people are keeping the pandemic alive.

Step Up Volusia

Step Up Volusia is represented by a group of city and county leaders, organizations and influencers within our community who have the well-being of our citizens of this county at heart. Our goal is stopping the spread of COVID-19 in Volusia County.

To achieve this objective we all need to wash up, back up and mask up - three simple guidelines supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Florida Department of Health.

Washing your hands is easy - something we should all be doing anyway.

By backing up, we are encouraging people to maintain their social distance - at least six feet - from others who may want their space. But this also will lessen your chance of contracting the virus.
