🚭Today is National No Smoking Day, a great reminder that quitting smoking can make a big difference — not only for your overall health, but for your dental and oral health too.

Smoking and to***co use can lead to serious long-term effects in the mouth, including:
🦷 Stained teeth and bad breath
🦷 Increased plaque and tartar buildup
🦷 Gum disease (periodontal disease)
🦷 Gum recession and tooth loss
🦷 Delayed healing after dental treatment
🦷 Higher risk of oral cancer

One of the biggest concerns is that smoking can weaken your body’s ability to fight infection — which makes it harder for your gums to stay healthy and heal properly.

If you’ve been thinking about quitting, today is a great day to take that first step. Even small changes can lead to major improvements in your smile and your health.

If you’d like support, talk with your doctor or healthcare provider about resources to help you quit — you don’t have to do it alone.

Dental Myth Buster!

Myth: Bleeding gums are normal.
Truth: Bleeding gums are not normal. They’re often a sign of gum inflammation or early gum disease—and your gums are trying to tell you something.

The good news? When caught early, gum issues are very treatable with proper care and regular cleanings. Brushing, flossing, and routine dental visits can make a big difference in keeping your gums healthy.

If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, don’t ignore it—we’re here to help. 💙

I have been truly overwhelmed by all the kind words and messages. Thank you — they mean more to me than you know.
It has been an incredible privilege to serve this community through my years at Delano Dental. I’ve been blessed with wonderful patients, lasting friendships, and a career that never felt “just like a job.”
I also have to say — I was fortunate to work alongside an outstanding team over the years. The staff made the long days enjoyable, kept me organized (most of the time 😉), and helped create the caring environment our patients experienced. I couldn’t have done it without them.
As I head into retirement, I promise to keep flossing… and I may even try to take my own advice for once.
Thank you all for being such an important part of this chapter of my life.
— Mark

After nearly four decades of dedication, care, and commitment, we celebrate the retirement of Dr. Mark Madden—a true cornerstone of Delano Dental and a respected member of our community.

Delano Dental was founded in 1977 by Dr. Tom Madden, and Dr. Mark joined the practice in 1988 after completing dental school, continuing a family legacy built on exceptional dentistry and genuine patient care. Over the course of nearly 39 years, Dr. Mark treated generations of families, always taking the time to know his patients as individuals—asking about their children, their lives, and how they were truly doing.

Dr. Mark earned his DDS from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1988 and went on to serve on the school’s clinical staff for more than a decade. He was deeply committed to continuing education and advancing dentistry through technology, helping bring innovation, comfort, and precision to our practice. As a Fellow of the International College of Oral Implantology, his dedication to the profession was evident throughout his career.

Within our practice, Dr. Mark was known for far more than his clinical excellence. He was kind, genuine, and consistently optimistic—always the first to focus on the positive. His unmistakable laugh filled the office, his honey was generously shared, and his Friday surprise donuts were often accompanied by his familiar and cheerful reminder: “Happy Friday—we made it!”

Dr. Mark was also a mentor and teacher, generously sharing his knowledge and experience with those around him. Many members of our team are stronger clinicians and assistants today because of the guidance, encouragement, and support he provided along the way.

As he enters retirement, Dr. Mark looks forward to spending more time at the cabin—cutting, stacking, and selling what he proudly calls “the best firewood” (Doc’s Firewood), fishing with his impressive fish catchers, and enjoying time with Linda, their children, and grandchildren.

Dr. Mark, thank you for your decades of service, leadership, humor, and heart. You will always remain a part of the Delano Dental family, and your legacy will live on through the countless smiles you’ve cared for and the lives you’ve touched.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Mark Madden on an extraordinary career and wishing him all the best in a well-earned retirement.

Prophylaxis vs. Periodontal Maintenance: What’s the Difference?

Not all dental cleanings are the same — and understanding which type you need plays an important role in maintaining your oral health.

A prophylaxis (routine cleaning) is recommended for patients with healthy gums. It focuses on removing plaque and tartar above the gumline to help prevent cavities and gum disease.

Periodontal maintenance, on the other hand, is designed for patients who have been treated for gum disease. This type of cleaning is more thorough, reaching below the gumline to help manage bacteria, reduce inflammation, and prevent the progression of periodontal disease.

Our team at Delano Dental evaluates your individual oral health needs to determine the most appropriate type of care for you — ensuring your smile stays healthy long-term.
