In our work, we see firsthand what a difference it makes when someone has thought through their wishes — and written them down.

Dr. Sarah Brabant taught death and dying in college for decades. When she was recently diagnosed with metastatic cancer that had spread to her lungs, brain, and spine, she declined treatment and chose Hospice.

David Begnaud, one of her former students, sat down to interview her.
It's exactly what we encourage every family to do: she had her wishes written down and ready, so the people she loves didn't have to carry that weight. And one of those wishes? No self-written obituary — she wants her kids to tell her story the way they remember it, not the way she'd script it.

There's so much wisdom here. We couldn't keep it to ourselves.

Souad NeJame

Souad NeJame, 89, of Delmar, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 17, 2026, in her home, mere feet from where her beloved husband passed away 17 years ago, a tender final detail that reflects the deep and enduring love they shared.

Affectionately known to all as "Sousou or Sittoo," Souad was born on December 2, 1936, in Masser El Chouf, Lebanon, the youngest of five children born to Selim and Farida. Her life was a testament to the warmth, humor, and care she bestowed so generously upon everyone she met.

Souad was known for her devotion to tradition, family, and friendship. Her greatest joys were found in life’s simple, shared moments, which included gathering loved ones around a full dining room table for hummus, tabbouleh, and baklava, brewing a pot of Lebanese coffee—famously far too strong for most—for her afternoon guests, and cheering on the Syracuse basketball team or catching up on WWE, game shows, and soap operas with her children and their friends in Syracuse, and later with her grandchildren in Delmar.

Souad was preceded in death by her siblings, Marie, Fouad, and Rose, and her adoring husband, Anees.

Her legacy lives on through her best friend and sister, Selma Bitar, with whom she shared daily conversations. She is also survived by her loving sons, Kareem NeJame of Beacon and Samir NeJame of Bethlehem; her cherished daughter-in-law, Kathleen O’Brien-NeJame; and the three people who were truly her heart and soul: her grandchildren, Sarah (22), Colin (20), and Ian (17). She also leaves behind many dear family members and friends.

A graveside service will be held in her honor on April 24, 2026, at 10:00am at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd. in Schuylerville, NY. Kindly arrive between 9:30 and 10:00 just inside the gates of the cemetery, where the funeral procession will form, before driving to the cemetery committal shelter. Those who gather will celebrate a life defined by devotion, laughter, and the indelible mark of a woman whose kindness reached far beyond her own doorstep.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Albany, NY 12211.

Patricia Ann Adams

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Patricia Ann Adams (Shaw), who departed this life on April 4, 2026, in Altamont, New York, the very day she celebrated her 75th birthday. Born on April 4, 1951, in Albany, New York, Patricia, known affectionately to family and friends as Polly, lived a life marked by unwavering dedication, love, and advocacy.

Patricia was a graduate of Bethlehem Central High School, where she met the love of her life and was married for 57 years. In 1983, she played an instrumental role in establishing Builder's Kitchens, Inc. While managing the complexities of Builder's Kitchens, Patricia faced her greatest personal challenge with unforgettable courage—when her daughter Ali was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder. With tireless devotion, she ensured that Ali’s needs were met every single day, embodying the very essence of maternal love and strength.

Her commitment extended far beyond her immediate family. Patricia was a passionate advocate for children with disabilities and served on the board at the Center for Disability Services, where she was the driving force behind the creation of the “Ali Adams Fun Park” at the Langdon School. Thanks to her vision and tenacity, the park became a joyful haven where all children could play and thrive. Her proudest accomplishment was helping others through their struggles, a mission she embodied in every aspect of her life.

She was devoted wholeheartedly to her family, her energy and love boundless. Nothing brought her greater joy than spending cherished time with her grandbabies—watching their sports games, dance recitals, and school activities, nurturing each moment with love and pride.

Patricia is survived by those who loved her dearly: her husband, Richard Adams Sr.; her children, Bridgette McGowan (husband) Tom McGowan Jr., Richard Adams Jr., (fiancé) Dianne Francis; Ali Adams; her goddaughter, Sharan Johnson; her brother, James Shaw, (wife) Julie Shaw. She also leaves behind beloved grandchildren; Adam McGowan, Jackson Adams, Reesa McGowan, Jaylen Johnson, and Julia Francis, who will carry forward her legacy of love and joy. Patricia was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Shaw, her mother Marion Gallup Shaw and her brother, Joseph Shaw.

She will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and eternally cherished by all who had the privilege to know her. May Patricia Ann Adams rest in peace, reunited with those she loved and who now watch over her.

A Mass to celebrate Patricia's life will be held on Friday, April 17 at 10 am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Pl., Delmar. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont. There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Center for Disabilities Services Adult Day Program.

Bruce C. Buckman

Bruce C. Buckman, 82, of Delmar, NY, passed away peacefully at home of pulmonary fibrosis on April 4, 2026. His wife of 55 years, Lynn, was by his side.

Bruce was born in White Plains, NY to Charles and Elinor (née Platzer) Buckman.

A proud veteran, Bruce served in the U.S. Navy from 1962-1966, specializing in aviation electronics. During his service aboard the USS Enterprise and USS America, he sailed around the world twice, stopping at ports in dozens of countries. He later graduated from SUNY Albany with a degree in history.

Bruce met his wife, Lynn Cipolli Buckman, at a college freshman welcoming dance. They made their home in Mountaindale, NY, for 42 years, where he was a longtime volunteer for the fire company and served on the Fallsburg Central School District Board of Education.

He worked for 34 years for the New York State Division of Parole, ultimately serving as Area Supervisor. Bruce seemed to know every bakery in NY, never arriving empty handed at the many parole offices he traveled to throughout the state.

Bruce was an early riser who looked forward to each day, often enjoying long walks or adventures with Lynn, classical music, bread baking and old movies. He was a voracious reader of fiction and history and a great conversationalist.

Bruce had a deep curiosity and respect for other cultures. In retirement, he and Lynn traveled the world and spent winters on the beach in South Carolina. Never passing up an opportunity to chat with a street vendor or local host, he formed long-standing friendships during his travels.

In addition to his wife, Lynn, he is survived by his daughter Sarah and son-in-law Andrew Lubin; his son Christopher and daughter-in-law Joanna Buckman; and his daughter Nora and son-in-law William Kern.

Bruce was cherished by grandchildren Sophia and Dahlia Lubin; Charles, Lucy, Elizabeth, and Elinor Buckman; and Hazel Kern, who brought him so much joy in his later years.

He is also survived by his sister Elinor and brother-in-law Gary Muller; his sister Candace and brother-in-law Robert Abdoo; a special cousin AJ Metzgar; and many nieces and nephews.

He loved spending time with his many old friends from Sullivan County, his retired Parole coworkers and the new friends he made in Delmar, NY.

Friends and family are invited to gather and share memories at the Spinney Club House, 6 Parker Mathusa Pl., Delmar, NY on Saturday, June 13, 2026 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM.
