💙 April Staff Highlight: James “Jimmy” Nicholson

James “Jimmy” Nicholson has been part of Beachcomber’s story since the very beginning, joining in 1976 alongside founder Jim Bryan during the program’s first year.

What started with Saturday morning groups quickly became a lifelong commitment to recovery. Jimmy witnessed, and helped shape, the culture that still defines Beachcomber today: unity among staff, genuine care for clients, and an unwavering dedication to helping people not only get sober, but stay sober.

Guided by Jim Bryan’s leadership and example, Jimmy carried those values throughout his entire career in addiction recovery, building a legacy rooted in compassion, service, and being part of the solution.

His journey is a reminder of the foundation Beachcomber was built on… and the lives that continue to be impacted because of it.

Today we recognize Black Balloon Day, a time to honor and remember the lives lost to overdose and addiction.

Black balloons serve as a symbol of remembrance for those who are no longer with us and a reminder of the families, friends, and communities impacted by this disease.

At The Beachcomber Recovery Center, we stand with those grieving, those fighting for recovery, and those working every day to bring hope and healing to others.

Our Beachcomber family came together for a little western-themed fun, good food, and even better fellowship. Events like these remind us that community is one of the strongest foundations for lasting recovery.

💙 Staff Highlight: Dr. Vladislava Culina, MD

Dr. Vladislava Culina is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist and Addiction Medicine specialist who has been a cornerstone of Beachcomber Recovery since 2018. As Medical Director, she oversees all medical aspects of mental health and substance use treatment, ensuring every level of care is grounded in evidence-based practices, safety, and compassion.

From residential treatment to HIOP and IOP programs, Dr. Culina has played a key role in the growth and leadership of Beachcomber’s continuum of care, guiding clinical teams, supporting complex cases, and upholding the highest standards of treatment.

Beyond her work as a physician, Dr. Culina values creativity, connection, and balance, enjoying cooking traditional meals, painting, gardening, traveling, and spending time with family.

Her leadership reflects what Beachcomber stands for: accountability, empathy, and a deep commitment to helping individuals and families build lasting recovery. For over 50 years, Beachcomber Recovery has been proud to serve those seeking hope and healing, and leaders like Dr. Culina make that mission possible. 🫶
