Foot or ankle pain? Don’t let providers give you treatments that “kick the can down the road”

Foot pain? I always have two primary questions when a patient walks into my office who has seen another provider. 1.) What was the diagnosis ? 2.) What was the solution?

Too many times I hear….”He told me to do these stretches and roll
my foot on a frozen water bottle…and if that doesn’t work, we will do cortisone shots.”

This is why I am packed with patients.

Frozen water bottle rolling is a waste of time and cortisone just kicks the can down the road….and with multiple cortisone shots…you are actually worsening the already degenerative changes in your tissues.

Is your foot arch caving in? Pain on the inside of your ankle? Experiencing “”Flatfoot”? Maybe you have had flat feet your whole life with no pain but lately you are in pain?

You could be experiencing what we call AAFD… Or adult acquired flat foot deformity and it is critical to start treating it as early as possible.

I do not recommend a boot or a Cortisone shot or a medication ….
This type of condition needs a very thorough strategy…

They are very, very specific muscles and tendons that need to be taken care of …. There are loading issues that need to be corrected… Timing is important.
Soft tissues need to be healed. And only after an adequate amount of healing and protection, can we begin very specific and personalized strengthening strategies so that you can walk for years to come. Anything short of a comprehensive strategy is just setting you up for failure.

A very nice woman contacted me yesterday who has a “Collapsing Arch”…… what we know as adult acquired flatfoot deformity (AAFD or AAF)

One of the most critical things to realize about foot pain is that it can actually shorten your life.

I am writing a book right now that highlights the connection between foot pain, lack of proper intervention, and early mortality.

On the surface… It seems like common sense… When your feet hurt… You move less.… And when you move less every other organ and system in the human body declines in performance and optimization.

I am proud to say that I save people from this disastrous path…

And I help elevate people to a comprehensive pathway to healing… And it all starts with caring… And spending enough time with people… To understand the root cause of their particular foot pain as early in the process as possible.

Too many wonderful people… Go down the path… Of symptom hiding/masking…. which only kicks the can down the road… It is not too late… To get off that road

The best shoes, the best inserts… That people rave about all over the Internet… May in fact be amazing… But they may not be good for your particular foot or condition…

I always remember throughout my career… People with bad back pain… sitting at work….. They would buy the best ergonomic chair… Sometimes very expensive chairs… Only to be disappointed that their pain didn’t go away.

 Remember … It doesn’t matter what’s good for everyone… It matters what’s good for you…

As you move forward this year in 2026… Make sure any provider who works with you is taking a personalized approach. And try not to get your information from Google or YouTube.

A wonderful patient just left my office after completing 4 treatments for Morton’s Neuroma in both feet.

She said “The one foot I barely notice the numbness anymore” and the other is actually much better already” “I can’t believe the difference “

A very nice woman called me today and wondered if she was a candidate for what I do.

She said she had a 3 level fusion in her Lumbar spine…and that it was doing great, however, she is dealing with some bad hip pain.

She mentioned that her MD let her know that she wasn’t bone on bone but had “some” arthritis.

Couple things:

1.) The “hip” can mean several different things to a Neuromusculoskeletal Provider like me (and should).

2.) Just because someone has Arthritis, doesn’t mean that it is the cause of his/her symptoms. And many times, there can be multiple “contributors” that influence her symptoms.

3.) Over the phone, it sounds like she could be an excellent candidate as her primary goal is to avoid another surgery and I treat hips with Softwave ESWT (In addition to implementing a strategy to help for long term success) BUT…certainly need to screen her.

Always have to find the primary cause (s) of the symptoms and fix those!
