Recovery Work Matters — The Hard Truth About Addiction, Overdose, and Su***de
In the recovery community, we sometimes learn hard lessons in painful ways.
Over the past week, two men I knew from the recovery world died. One from an overdose. One from su***de.
Both had been in recovery before. Both had been around the program. Both had people who cared about them.
But addiction is ruthless, and the truth many people avoid saying out loud is this:
Recovery work matters.
Sobriety is not maintained by intention alone. It’s maintained by action.
Meetings. Sponsorship. Accountability. Structure. Community. Doing the work even when it’s uncomfortable.
Many people believe that stopping substances is the finish line. In reality, stopping is only the beginning. Without ongoing recovery work, relapse and isolation can slowly creep back in.
That’s why structured sober living environments exist. Structure supports recovery work. Accountability protects sobriety.
Recovery is not maintained by comfort. It’s maintained by consistency.
