Delray Beach CERT

Delray Beach CERT Disaster preparedness is the name of the game for CERT - the Community Emergency Response Team program - offered by the Delray Beach Fire-Rescue Dept.

The Delray Beach Fire Department offers city residents the opportunity to participate in Community Emergency Response Training. What is CERT and Why Is There a Need? Each year, South Florida communities are threatened by severe weather, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and flash floods. In this day and age, the threat of man-made disasters is also a possibility. Whatever the cause, the damage caused by such disasters effects everyone. Disasters can:

Severely restrict and overwhelm emergency response resources, communications, transportation and utilities. Leave individuals and neighborhoods cut off from outside emergency support for hours or days. What If This Happened to Us? Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) are trained to take care of themselves and then help others in their communities for the first three days following a disaster. This is when debris-clogged or damaged roads and disrupted communications, as well as a high volume of calls, may prevent access by professional emergency response personnel. CERT training equips citizens with the basic skills required to handle their own needs and then to be able to respond to their communities needs in the aftermath of a disaster. What Does the Course Involve? The Community Emergency Response Team course consists of 24 hours of training. One night a week for eight weeks, Delray Beach Firefighters and Paramedics teach the program. The course agenda includes:

Week 1 DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
Week 2 DISASTER FIRE SUPPRESSION
Week 3 DISASTER MEDICAL OPERATIONS, PART 1
Week 4 DISASTER MEDICAL OPERATIONS, PART 2
Week 5 LIGHT SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATIONS
Week 6 TERRORISM / INCIDENT COMMAND SYSTEM
Week 7 DISASTER PSYCHOLOGY / EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS
Week 8 FINAL REVIEW / DISASTER SIMULATION / GRADUATION

DBFR firefighter Tommie Osborn traveled all the way to the Netherlands to prove something his coworkers already know. He’s the BEST! Osborn, who has worked for DBFR since 1994, competed in the World Police & Fire Games, an Olympic-sized event that drew more than 10,000 athletes from 70 countries.

At age 58, Osborn brought home a neck-full of medals after seven days of competing in Track & Field and Crossfit. He tied for gold in the men’s masters division of Crossfit, which involved multiple, grueling workouts that test strength, endurance, coordination and overall fitness. He earned a gold medal in the 4 x 400 relay, a silver in the 200-meter run and a bronze in the 4 x 100 relay. He placed 4th in the 400-meter run. Osborn has been running track & field since he was a child. He started Crossfit in 2007 with a group of other DBFR firefighters.

Osborn loves to travel and competed in his first Police & Fire Games in 1996. He has done too many to count since then, only missing a few of the biennial events. The goal of the Games is to “stimulate sportsmanship and to generate respect for all those emergency workers who are ready for us day and night.” Osborn plans to go to Canada in 2023 to represent DBFR once again on a world stage. We couldn’t be prouder. CONGRATULATIONS, TOMMIE OSBORN!

Don’t Push Back! ⚠
Dolphins and other marine mammals strand when they are sick or injured. Pushing a marine mammal back into the water delays assessment and treatment from trained responders and can lead to further injury and eventual death. If you see a stranded animal, follow these three steps to help:
➡ STOP: Don’t push them back!
➡ CALL: 888-404-3922 Wildlife Alert Hotline
➡ ASSIST: Follow directions from a trained responder

See how you can help prevent strandings on our FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute page: https://bit.ly/3SnASm9

Fire sprinklers did their job and helped get an electrical fire under control just before 5 p.m. Friday at Abbey Delray South, a senior living facility. DBFR firefighters went door-to-door contacting residents and partially evacuated one floor due to smoke and water. Investigators say the fire started inside an elevator mechanical room and was contained to the room of origin. There were no injuries.

Firefighters at DBFR's Special Ops Station 115 received hazardous materials training this week that involved the simulation of a su***de with a dangerous chemical. Firefighters had to make entry, assess the situation, extract, decontaminate and treat the victim. Job well done!
