You might have seen bakuchiol called a natural alternative to retinol, but does it actually work? 👀✨ Let’s break it down ⬇️

💡 Retinol is part of the retinoid family and remains the gold standard for anti-agiing. It’s been studied for decades and works by increasing cell turnover and stimulating collagen, helping to improve fine lines, wrinkles, texture and pigmentation

🌿 Bakuchiol is a plant-derived ingredient shown to support collagen production and reduce signs of aging. It also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits

📊 The key difference? Evidence. Bakuchiol doesn’t yet have the same depth or long-term clinical research behind it as retinoids.

That said, it’s generally gentler, doesn’t increase sun sensitivity, and can be a great option if you have very sensitive skin, can’t tolerate retinoids, are pregnant, or are looking for a plant-based alternative.

So does bakuchiol work? Yes.
But if you’re looking for the most evidence-backed, results-driven option for anti-ageing, retinoids still set the benchmark 🧪

As always, the best ingredient is the one your skin can tolerate and use consistently 💪

⏰ Treatment length: 8 months

“Before starting my Dermatica prescription my skin was very dull with areas of hyperpigmentation and deep wrinkles. I am delighted with the improvements I am starting to see after 9 months. My expectations where low as rather than fine lines I had deep set lines but using my formula has really softened these lines."

If you have acne, this ingredient is a game-changer 🧪

Adapalene is a third-generation topical retinoid that helps unblock pores, prevent new breakouts, and improve skin texture by speeding up cell turnover and reducing inflammation - making it a go-to for mild to moderate acne 💪

It targets acne right at the source and can also help fade post-acne marks over time 🕰️

This ingredient is prescription-only, so you need a dermatology professional like the ones on the Dermatica team to prescribe it to you. You can fill out a consultation at the link in our bio to see if it could work for you 🙌

As with all retinoids, start slowly, moisturize, and protect your skin with SPF. The best acne ingredient is one you can use consistently. ✨

Is it true that your gut affects your skin? 👀✨

The short answer is yes, your gut can influence your skin.
🧬 The gut–skin axis is a two-way communication system linking your digestive tract and your skin through immune signalling, inflammation, and the microbiome. When your gut microbiome is balanced, it helps support immune regulation and healthier skin function

⚠️ Modern lifestyle factors like chronic stress, antibiotics, highly processed foods, and low-fibre diets can disrupt this balance. When this happens, it may show up on the skin as breakouts, redness, or persistent dullness

📊 Research has found links between gut imbalance and several common skin conditions, including acne, rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema

🧠 Stress also plays a major role. Increased cortisol can weaken the skin barrier, slow healing, and increase sensitivity.

So how can you support both your gut and your skin?

🥦 Focus on a fibre-rich, nutrient-dense diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and omega-3-rich foods like oily fish
🦠 Probiotics and prebiotic, from foods or supplements, may also help support a healthier microbiome

Supporting gut balance and maintaining a resilient skin barrier helps create the conditions for clearer, brighter, healthier-looking skin ✨

“My confidence has improved dramatically, I used to feel so anxious about my boyfriend seeing my skin without make up that I would dash under the bed covers after taking it off, and get up early to make sure I put make up on. It feels great to see how dramatic the difference is, and to be able to give hope to people that are also suffering with skin issues. I think people underestimate how much it affects aspects of your confidence that you wouldn’t imagine.”

“I am honestly so happy with the change to my skin over the past few months - I rarely wear foundation any more and haven’t touched concealer in months. Additionally, I prefer to be quite low maintenance with skin care (although I had bought a great many ineffective products in the past) and absolutely love how simple and streamlined my regime now is.”

“My biggest skincare mistake before Dermatica was buying multiple bottles of a product which others say works for them, forgetting that just because it works for others doesn’t mean it’ll work for me. This happened often at the start of my skin care journey when I wasn’t fully aware of the importance of buying products for my skin type and I didn’t know which products to buy or anything about active ingredients. It feels incredible and a little surreal, to think I was finally able to achieve my skin goals which I previously feared would not be possible without meds. Hopefully others can see the results and feel reassured that they too can achieve their skin goals.”

If you have acne these are 3 ingredients you need to know about ⬇️

🧬 Adapalene
A retinoid that targets acne at the source. It helps keep pores clear, reduces blackheads and whiteheads, improves skin texture, and lowers the risk of post-acne marks and scarring. The best part? It’s gentler and more stable than older retinoids, so it plays well with other acne-fighting ingredients.

🦠 Benzoyl Peroxide
A true multitasker. It kills acne-causing bacteria, calms inflammation, and helps unclog pores, making it especially effective for red, inflamed breakouts. It can be used alone or alongside retinoids and antibiotics for more powerful acne control.

🌿 Clindamycin
A topical antibiotic that reduces acne by targeting bacteria and soothing inflammation. It’s often combined with ingredients like adapalene or benzoyl peroxide to tackle multiple causes of acne at once.

⚠️ We don’t recommend mixing these ingredients yourself. If you want them combined safely and effectively in the right strengths for your skin, a personalised prescription formula can make all the difference. Fill out a consultation with our dermatology team to get started 💙✨
