HOLD YOUR BABY. WHENEVER YOU WANT TO. ENJOY THE CUDDLES AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN.
EVEN WHEN THEY TELL YOU NOT TO.
EVEN WHEN THEY TELL YOU YOUR BABY IS GOING TO MANIPULATE YOU. THEY MAY TELL YOU THAT YOUR BABY WILL WANT IT ALL THE TIME. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT? THEY ARE ONLY SMALL FOR A SHORT TIME. ONE DAY THEY WON'T WANT THE CUDDLES AND THEY WILL BE TOO BIG TO BE HELD. SO FOR NOW ENJOY EVERY MOMENT. AND SO WHAT IF THEY WANT IT ALL THE TIME. YOUR BABY SHOULD KNOW THAT YOU WILL ALWAYS BE THERE AND WILL ALWAYS RESPOND WHEN THEY CRY. ❤️❤️❤️

This is so important!

Birth plans can change in an instant and that’s ok. What’s important is you’re informed of all options along the way. Only then can you make informed decisions about your body and baby!

The thyroid is one of the most important and complex glands in our body. And as women, we need to know a thing or two about it because statistically, 1 in 8 of us will suffer from thyroid issues during our lifetime, with significant impacts on overall health and well-being. Naturally, we all have questions surrounding this precious anatomy, but the answers don’t always come as easily, leaving many in the dark with no clear direction.

A healthy thyroid is crucial for maintaining energy levels, metabolism, and overall health. There’s also definitely a time and place for medication - if you’re trying to conceive or are pregnant and have hypothyroidism, you’re feeling awful, or if your labs are off the chain.

It is possible, however, for many women with mild to moderate symptoms and slightly low thyroid function to improve thyroid hormone levels and lower antibodies without medication. And herbs and supplements can be supportive. The first 3 are, IMHO, important to use even if you are on thyroid medication, to support thyroid health.

Supplements:
☀️Vitamin D: Needed to produce and use thyroid hormones and an important immune modulator.
🌰Selenium: Critical in the conversion of T4 to T3 and may help to decrease the risk of developing postpartum thyroiditis in pregnant women with positive TPO antibodies.
🌾Inositol: Studies show that myoinositol + selenium is powerful at reducing anti-thyroid autoantibodies + supports healthy TSH levels.
🍣Zinc: An important nutrient for T4 to T3 conversion.
Herbs to consider:
🌿Ashwagandha: May increase circulating T4 levels and possibly T3. Overall the data shows it is safe in autoimmune conditions, but start with a low dose and see how YOU feel.
🌱Guggul: An ayurvedic herb that has been shown to improve T4 and T3 levels as well as intake of iodine.
Save this post so you can come back to it later and head to the link in bio for more info and safety during pregnancy and BF’ing as well as doses! And for more, check out my book The Adrenal Thyroid Revolution- the name says it all!

Not sure where to start? Vit D + Selenium + Inositol. Take x 3 months and recheck labs.🌿

For those of us in more northerly climates, the cold temps and darker days naturally call us to go more inward. Winter is also brings a spike in colds and flus - and with this, I turn to the botanicals that can nourish and support immune health - and that we can turn to for symptom relief.

Some of the leading ladies in my winter apothecary include:

(If you see this symbol 🤰🏻 okay while pregnant for acute symptoms only, but talk with your provider & don’t skip needed medical care. All are fine while BF’ing.)

🌿Medicinal mushrooms: Shiitakes, reishi, and others demonstrate antiviral activity and actually nourish the immune system, while helping prevent viral infections. I have a blog about medicinal mushrooms here on my webisite. Prevention only.

🌿Astragalus root: Complex polysaccharides in astragalus act as immunomodulators. Try it in my Immune Boosting Soup recipe at my website - or take as capsules or tincture. Prevention only.

🌿Garlic: Boost the disease-fighting response of white blood cells when faced with viruses helping to shorten duration of illness & prevent it in the first place. Use as prevention and in tea or soup during cold or flu. 🤰🏻

🌿Elderberry: Studies have shown extract can reduce the severity and duration of the flu when taking within 48 hours of symptom onset. Beneficial for acute symptoms, not so much for prevention. (🤰🏻for up to 5 days only and not in first trimester)

🌿Ginger: Used for thousands of years to warm the body, beat chills, and reduce aches, pains, and digestive symptoms. It’s also antiviral. For symptom treatment (🤰🏻up to 1 gm day)

🌿Echinacea: Contains active substances that support immune function, prevent colds, and may help reduce the severity and length of a cold. Can be used preventatively and for symptoms. 🤰🏻

🌿Turmeric- similar to ginger, has well-known anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial properties to help prevent and treat colds and viral infections.

Which of these are your top picks for cold & flu season? What other herbs do you keep in your fall medicine cabinet?

“I Won’t Hold Your Baby

…unless you ask me to, in which case, I will snuggle and cuddle your baby as much as you want me to.

I never ask my clients if I can hold their baby. In fact, I rarely ever touch my client’s baby if I can help it. Sounds sort of like the opposite of what you might picture of a doula, right? We must all be birth crazy, baby obsessed women who just want to cover babies in kisses and love and get an emotional high from attending births?

Not this doula.

I LOVE attending births. Call me crazy, but getting those middle of the night calls is one of my favorite parts of this job. I get to listen to someone at their most vulnerable times - the excitement, the hesitation, the nervousness of the unknown. Being able to provide some comfort, reassurance and continuity of care to the people I work with is so important to me (and them!)

Rushing off in the night, quietly getting myself ready, getting in the car and heading off to their home or hospital makes me feel like I’m on a secret birth mission that nobody around me knows about. When I arrive I fall as seamlessly as I can into the rhythm of the birth and start supporting my clients in whatever way they need most.

When the baby arrives I step aside and leave room for the new parents to discover their baby. I try and grab some photos (I’m not a birth photographer though, so keep your expectations in check!) and then I only step in if my client needs me for some reason.

Why does that matter? Why won’t I ask to hold your baby? Simply because: they are yours, not mine. I want you to be able to hold your baby as close as you want, for as long as you want without anyone interrupting that time. There will be enough people coming along in the next few hours and weeks who need to take that baby out of your arms for whatever reason, and tons of friends and family who will offer help by “holding the baby”.

Instead, I want to hold you, whether that’s in my arms, in my heart or my thoughts. By supporting and “holding” you, I don’t need to hold your baby. But if you ask me to, I would LOVE to.”
