When there is pain on the inside or outside of the knee, look to the hip or ankle/foot for its cause. In the case of medial knee pain, an over pronated foot can often be the cause, along with under active hip abductors. Medial knee pain can also be caused by weakness in the medial hip flexors, like the psoas, re**us femoris, and adductors. Lateral knee pain can be caused by an over supinated foot and weakness in the hip adductors. Lateral knee pain can also be caused by over active peroneals at the tib-fib joint, or by an over active IT band compensating for weak hip abductors. Rather than guessing or assuming based on a formula, learn to test your hypotheses with a neurological evaluation like NKT. Then you'll know what to release and what to activate, the basis of what you give your patients/clients as a home exercise program.
