On this day in 1912, the RMS Titanic left port for her maiden voyage. Among the passengers was Dr. Washington Dodge, a physician traveling with his family 👨‍⚕️

As dogwoods start blooming across Demopolis, you might notice their little petals blooming through the trees: and there’s a beautiful old Southern legend behind them 🌸

The story goes that long ago, the dogwood wasn’t the small, delicate tree we know today.

It was tall, straight, and strong: sturdy enough for building, and, as the legend tells it, sturdy enough to be used for the cross at the crucifixion. 🌳

When Jesus was crucified, the dogwood tree was said to be heartbroken that its wood had been used for such suffering. From then on: It would never again grow tall enough to be used for a cross,
It would become slender and twisted, no longer a tree of burden - and every spring, its blossoms would tell the story of Good Friday 🤍

Look closely at a dogwood bloom and you’ll see the symbolism woven into its petals:

🌸 Four petals shaped like a cross
Darkened notches at the tips, like tiny nail marks
🩸soft reddish or brownish stains, said to resemble blood
👑 And a tight center that looks like a crown of thorns

It’s not a historical account, but it’s one that has lived on for generations, especially here in the South. And every spring, when the dogwoods bloom right around Easter, the legend becomes a gentle reminder of sacrifice, hope, and renewal 🌱
