Storm anxiety is a normal response, especially after experiencing severe weather. Be patient with yourself, stay informed, and practice grounding or coping skills to help your nervous system feel safe.
When thunder or lightning spikes your anxiety, try this 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique:
✨5 things you can see – notice details around you (a mug, a book, the window frame).
✨4 things you can touch – feel textures (your blanket, chair, your hands).
✨3 things you can hear – even the rain or distant thunder counts.
✨ 2 things you can smell – a candle, coffee, or your soap.
✨1 thing you can taste – sip water, tea, or even notice the lingering taste in your mouth.
This shifts your focus from fear to present-moment reality, helping your nervous system settle!
