Breast cancer is the most common female internal cancer diagnosis in the United States and the second leading cause of female cancer death after lung cancer.

Recommendations for cancer prevention from the prestigious American Institute for Cancer Research include maintaining a healthy weight; exercising; eating a diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and beans; and limiting the consumption of fast food, processed junk, meats, soda, and alcohol.

Adherence to these cancer prevention recommendations isn’t just associated with higher survival in cancer patients and lower risk of dying from cancer, but lower risk of dying overall. That’s the beauty of eating a more plant-based diet. The same diet that’s anti-cancer is also anti-heart disease and apparently even anti-lung disease.

Poor functioning mitochondria lead to oxidative stress.

Oxidation is the rust on our cars, the brown color that appears on an apple when cut and exposed to air, the rancid vegetable oil in our cupboards, and even the wrinkles that form on our skin. What most of us don’t realize is that our own tissues are rusting, our own fats are going rancid, and our brains are melting as we go about our daily lives.

What starts this process is some sort of insult—things like too many calories, smoking, a sunburn, exposure to toxins, anti-nutrients, and sugar. The insult leads to injury by tipping the balance and starting a chain reaction of damage to cells and tissues, which leads us down the path to weight gain and chronic illness.

When mitochondria aren’t working properly, metabolism runs less efficiently and can even shut down. This can lead to low energy, fatigue, memory loss, pain, rapid aging, and more.

So, how do we care for our mitochondria?

Eat a diverse plant-rich diet
Incorporate movement daily
Reduce your stress
Get good quality sleep
Increase your intake of omega-3 fats
Try intermittent fasting
Use cold and hot therapies

Dioxins are highly toxic pollutants that accumulate in tissue fat. Nearly all of the dioxins found in people who don’t work in hazardous conditions, such as toxic waste dumps, are thought to come from food, specifically meat, including fish, and milk. About 90 to 95 percent of our exposure to dioxins comes from the food supply.

There are phytonutrients in fruits, vegetables, tea, red wine, and beans that block the negative effects of dioxins. About three apples a day or a tablespoon or so of red onion has been shown to cut dioxin toxicity in half. The half-life of these phytonutrients in our body is only about 25 hours, so we need to include them day after day. If we eat enough of them, the intake from a plant-based diet may be able to inhibit the cancer-causing effects of dioxins.

“One of the biggest tragedies of human civilization is the precedence of chemical therapy over nutrition.
It’s a substitution of artificial therapy over natural, of poisons over food, in which we are feeding people in trying to correct the reactions of starvation.”
