Mike graduated from Denison High School in 1957 and attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University and the University of North Texas. Mike married the love of his life, Nelda Sue Phillips, on May 16, 1959, and together they had two children, Brian and Valerie.

Mike worked at Johns-Manville in Denison as a shipping manager for 30 years. Upon the plant closure, he started Texoma Kennels where he raised and trained English Pointer birddogs for 20 years. Mike was an avid outdoorsman, which was evident in his 50 plus year membership at Camp Sandy Point on Lake Texoma. He loved hunting and fishing, which led to a wealth of knowledge of all types of guns and knives. True to his roots, he always had a huge vegetable garden every summer, and he raised cattle until he was 79.

A hard worker his entire life, he also found time for his other interests. He was an award-winning s***t shooter and pointer breed field trial competitor and judge. He also loved grilling and smoking meat. He could always be counted on to provide delicious briskets, ribs, and hams at family gatherings.

Although Mike had many passions, his greatest love was his family and friends. Known as “Duke” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he kept the family smiling and laughing with his extraordinary sense of humor. All who knew him were humbled by his extremely generous spirit. He took great joy in seeing the surprise and gratitude of loved ones whenever he gifted them treasures he knew they would enjoy. Mike loved through his actions, whether it was rounding up a wayward calf, chasing a snake out of a neighbor’s house, or rescuing someone stuck in a ditch, he never hesitated to offer a helping hand.
