It was a bitterly cold day when a baby girl was born on the family farm where the country doctor preceded to pronounce the baby deceased at birth and lay her in a chair in the corner of the room. Minutes later her father saw the baby move her leg and attention was returned to her, thus beginning her 92-year journey on this earth.

On March 10, 2026, she peacefully passed from this life to life in Heaven. Jessie Mae Abbott was born on January 30, 1934, in Blue Jacket OK to Jess and Verda Abbott. She grew up in Vinita OK where she met James Thomas Harp, while he bought candy at the Five & Dime where she worked. They were married on January 27, 1954. They soon moved to Texas and began a family where Jessie was able to stay home and raise their five children. She took pride in running a happy home and her children were her pride and joy. It was very common for her home to be the gathering place for all the neighborhood children to play and enjoy Kool-Aid and cookies.

Jessie was a very active member at Twin Cities Baptist Church and later Parkside Baptist Church. It was a frequent sight to see her sitting at the kitchen table reading and studying her Bible. A relationship with Jesus was important to her and it was important to her for others to hear how Jesus loved them and they too can have a home in Heaven. After the children grew and left the home she became “Checker #5” at the old Walmart in Sherman. Later she returned to tending the home, gardening, and spoiling grandchildren. It was said that Jessie could plant a stick and it would sprout leaves.

She is survived by her husband James Harp of Denison, and children, Jeff (Karen) Harp, Jimi Lou (Jerry) Coleman of Denison, John (Barbara) Harp of Stonewall, LA, Jason Harp of Colorado Springs, CO, and Janet (Barry) McCuistion of Denison. Grandchildren Staci (Skyler) Gast, Kyle (Mandi) Harp, Dustin Harp, Lindsey Harp, Zachary (Holly) Harp, Traci (Weston) Jarvis and Caleb McCuistion. Great Grandchildren Hudson Gast, Asher Gast, Zane Gast, Brooke Gast, Cadence Hopper, Jameson Harp, Aubree Harp, MacKenzie Harp and Hudson Harp. Siblings Bill (Debbie) Abbott and Velma Holt, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Robert Abbott.

Funeral arrangements will be with Fisher Funeral Home with Family visitation from 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 13, 2026, and Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Fisher Funeral Home Chapel, with John Harp, officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Jeff Harp, John Harp, Jason Harp, Jerry Coleman, Barry McCuistion and Joe Meeker.

In honor of our mother being such a gifted gardener, we will be celebrating her by wearing spring colors at her service and welcome you to join us!

She entered this world as Anna Carole DeArmond on May 18, 1941 in Levelland, Texas. She left it from her home in Denison, Texas as Granny on March 2, 2026. She packed a ton of living into the 84 years in between. She barreled through the streets of Levelland with her hair on fire until David Ray Smith stole her heart and married her on December 28, 1956. They shared homes in other places but remained side by side until she went to wait for him in their ultimate home alongside the Lord.

She enjoyed painting, loved birds, and was an avid reader, but nothing energized her like her family did. Her 4 kids and their spouses—David W. Smith (Kathy), Mark A. Smith (Patricia), Kenneth R. Smith (Helen), and Laura S. Fontaine (Barry), along with 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren all shared one very special privilege. That privilege was an open invitation to a door that was never locked to catch a meal, watch a cartoon, or play the day away. Smithville, as it was called, was a magical place to be a kid, and she was the quiet (well, not always quiet) hostess who kept it going.

A little over a year ago, she faced tough medical news that brought a heightened awareness that she would face death. As one would expect, there were moments of fear, but a virtually unwavering, calm assurance in her that she would enjoy a wonderful eternity provided to her by the sacrifice of the God she loved. Many hearts are simultaneously hurting and rejoicing, knowing that she no longer hurts.

We miss you, Granny!

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at Cedarlawn Memorial Park, in Sherman, TX, with Pastor Steve Rice officiating.

Joanne Stanley Harrell
August 30, 1931 - February 28, 2026

Joanne S. Harrell, age 94, of Denison, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 28, 2026. She passed peacefully at home in the presence of her loving family.

Joanne was born on August 30, 1931, in Duncan, Oklahoma, the fourth of five children born to her parents, Felix Stanley and Edna Stanley. The family later moved to Waco, Texas where she graduated from Waco High School. After graduation, she started working in secretarial/office jobs and was soon employed in the base commander's office at James Connally Air Force Base in Waco. While at Connally, she met her future husband, Thomas E. Harrell, a fireman who was working at the base fire department. They were married in 1955, and the next year, 1956, they welcomed the birth of a son, Jeffrey, and later a daughter, Janice, was born in 1961. With the birth of her children, Joanne became a full-time mom. In 1965, due to Air Force base closures, the family moved to Sherman, Texas and Perrin Air Force Base, where Tom continued service as a fireman.

When her children got older, Joanne went back to work. She was employed for many years with the Grayson County Board of Realtors (Greater Texoma Association of Realtors) as their Executive Officer in Sherman. lt was during this time that she became active in Toastmasters and developed skills as a public speaker. Joanne remained active in the community in her retirement years. Church activities were an important part of her life. She was a volunteer with both the Wilson N. Jones Hospital (Sherman Medical Center) Auxiliary and the Medical Plaza Hospital Auxiliary gift shops for several years. Joanne was also active in the local chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Joanne was a longtime member of Parkside Baptist Church in Denison. She loved her Sunday School class, bible studies and worshiping in song. Although declining health prevented her from attending church in recent years, she enjoyed watching videos of Parkside's services at home. Her previous church memberships were at Trinity Baptist Church in Sherman as well as Sherman's First United Methodist Church, which the family joined upon first moving to Sherman. Joanne knew Jesus as her personal Savior. Her family misses her, but we are comforted that she is now in heaven, talking and walking with a clear mind and a body free of illness.

When Joanne married Tom Harrell she married into a life of boating, RV camping and travel. Some of the most cherished family memories are from days spent camping and boating on Lake Texoma and vacation trips to Arkansas, New Mexico and Colorado. Other fond memories are of when Joanne got together with her sisters, and they entertained everyone present with stories and laughter. Joanne was very close to her sisters throughout her life and, although they were not always living nearby, she remained in close contact with them through phone calls, letters and family get togethers. She gave her family all the joy, love and support that only a mother can give. We were truly blessed to know the love she had for us and we so loved her in return.

Joanne was predeceased by her parents; husband, Thomas E. Harrell; brother, Felix. W. Stanley, Jr.; and sisters, Dorothy Jean Hatley and Catherine Knight.

She is survived by her son, Jeff Harrell of Denison; daughter, Jan Dempsey (Tim) of Denison; grandson, Brad Carter of Austin, whom she absolutely loved and adored; and sister, Patsy Hall of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Fisher Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Bob Langford officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior of service.
