Among all the bones that form the human face, only one is capable of movement: the mandible, or lower jaw. While the other facial bones are firmly fused together to provide structure and protection, the mandible is uniquely designed for motion. It connects to the skull through the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) on either side of the head, allowing it to open, close, slide forward and backward, and move slightly from side to side.

This mobility is essential for everyday functions such as chewing food, speaking clearly, yawning, and expressing facial emotions. Without the mandible’s movement, actions that seem simple like biting or forming words would be impossible. Despite being just one bone, the mandible plays a central role in survival and communication, making it one of the most important and hardworking bones in the human body.
