I see many people still buying and selling during the storms and bad weather in the chicken groups on FB. Then they accuse the sellers of selling them sick birds. Maybe they did but it is more likely that the birds who were already stressed during these storms became more stressed by being taken from their homes and put directly in with a new group of birds.

Not sure why anyone thought they had to sell or buy during this time??? Anytime you bring home new birds from someone else's property, they should be quarantined a minimum of 2 weeks, but 30 days would be preferred. Don't have the area to do that? Well then you are putting your entire flock at risk. A dog kennel or large dog cage are great for quarantine. They need to be at least 30 ft away from your flock.

When you pick them up, you should be inspecting the birds. Are their combs pale? Are their feathers dirty? Are they half bald? Look under the wings or at the vent for mites. This should be the first look. It isn't always that the seller has sickness in their flock. It's more likely that their birds have been exposed to different things than your birds have. This is why the new birds need to acclimate to their new location before joining their new friends. You should be giving vitamins and probiotics to help them adjust to your home.

If you still choose not to quarantine, then don't complain when something goes wrong.

A big storm is coming to our part of NC. Time to get ready for it! Get those rubber water bowls ready. They are easy to pop out the ice and refill with fresh water. Make sure you have a dry place to feed everyone. Im adding fresh straw in my coops. Also adding a few tarps as wind breaks for the rabbits and poultry.

Do you have enough food on hand for your animals? Propane? Gas? Water in case the electricity goes out? Wood for the fireplace and food that you can either grill or eat as is? Dont wait until Friday. And the chickens won't make good decisions! This is when having an area to lock them into works out. If you dont know what I'm talking about, look at previous videos of our setup.

Rain Friday followed by snow and cold on the weekend. Next week its dry but bitter cold. Its our 2 weeks of winter.

We are members of the Montgomery County NC Beekeepers Association. Many people ask us how do you get started with beekeeping?
1. Join your local beekeeper group (contact your AG office for details)
2. Take a beginning beekeeping class
3. Find a mentor
The best time to start is in March so learn all you can before then!

Montgomery County NC Beekeepers Association meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:00 pm for a potluck dinner (bring a dish to pass), announcements at 6:30 pm, and the speaker starts at 7:00 pm.

Located: MCC bldg. 200, 1011 Page St, Troy. Follow the signs for beekeepers meeting. You do not have to be a member to attend.
