The C2 vertebra, or Axis, is the second cervical vertebra and is located directly beneath the C1 vertebra (Atlas). It's unique in its structure, featuring a bony protrusion known as the dens, which allows for rotation of the head.

The Axis transmits nerve signals related to sensation and motor control for certain parts of the head and neck. It also plays a role in supplying blood to the brain via the vertebral arteries.

The nerves at the C2 level primarily control the eyes and vision, the auditory nerves, sinuses, mastoid bones, tongue, forehead, and heart.

Starting at the top with C1, or the Atlas.

The C1 vertebra is the first cervical vertebra. It is located at the top of the spinal column, just beneath the skull. Its structure is unique being ring-like with no body or spinous process, and it carries the weight of the head.

C1 is responsible for the passage of the brainstem into the spinal cord and houses the vertebral arteries, which supply blood to the brain. It also allows for the majority of the movement of the head, including nodding and rotation.

The nerves at the C1 level primarily control the head and neck's blood supply and influence the function of the pituitary gland, which is the master gland controlling hormone production in the body.
