Leadership Lesson with Marcylle Combs - Buddy the Elf and Leadership
At our recent quarterly team meeting, we decided to have a little fun with the holidays and had a full-on Buddy the Elf-themed Christmas party! There were snowflakes, candy canes, and plenty of laughter. But in the middle of all the festive chaos, I shared a few leadership lessons inspired by Buddy himself.
Now, Buddy may not be your typical leadership expert, but his story is full of wisdom that speaks to us in home health and hospice.
Here are three lessons worth remembering:
• Celebrate Authenticity
Buddy never tried to be anyone but himself, even when he didn’t quite fit in. As leaders, authenticity matters. Your team and your patients need to see the real you. When we lead with honesty and transparency, we build trust, and trust is the foundation of great care.
• Find Joy in Bringing Joy
Buddy’s mission was simple: spread Christmas cheer. In our world, joy looks different, it’s a comforting word to a family, a smile during a tough day, or going the extra mile for a patient. Leaders set the tone. When we model joy, even in challenging times, it ripples through our teams and into the homes we serve.
• Stay Hopeful for Belief
Buddy never stopped believing, in Santa, in family, in the goodness of people. In home health and hospice, hope is powerful. We lead teams who face difficult realities every day. When we stay hopeful believing in our mission, our people, and the difference we make, we inspire others to keep going.
As we wrap up this year, let’s take a page from Buddy’s book: lead with authenticity, bring joy wherever you can, and never lose hope. After all, the best way to spread cheer, whether at Christmas or any time, is to live it out loud.
