Hometown Hero!!! Let's GO! Congratulations!!!!!
A North Texas kid just made world history.
Cooper Lutkenhaus of Justin Northwest ISD is now the world indoor champion in the 800 meters — and he did it at just 17 years old. On Sunday in Poland, the Northwest High School junior won the World Athletics Indoor Championships final in 1:44.24, becoming the youngest world indoor champion ever in the process.
Let that sink in for a second.
This isn’t a college star.
This isn’t a seasoned Olympian.
This is a junior from Northwest High School in Justin, Texas — a local kid training at his home school — standing on top of the world.
And he didn’t steal it against a weak field, either. Lutkenhaus held off Belgium’s Eliott Crestan and Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui, with all three medalists finishing in the 1:44 range.
For people around here, that makes this even more incredible. North Texas high school sports are already special, but this is something else entirely. A kid from Justin Northwest didn’t just win a state title or break a local record.
He won a world championship.
At 17.
Congratulations to Cooper, his family, his coaches, Northwest High School, and everybody in Justin who’s watched this remarkable rise up close.
