Essential oils are volatile liquids distilled from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. They are oxygenating and help transport nutrients to the cells of our body. In fact, most viruses, fungi, and bacteria can not live in the presence of many essential oils, especially those high in phenols, carvacrol, thymol, and terpenes. Receptor cells known as olfactory epithelium, when stimulated by odor molecules (fragrance inhaled) triggers electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb,the gustatory center (taste), and amygdala (where memory is stored) and other parts of the lambic system of the brain. Because the limbic system is directly correlated to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, essential oils can have impacting physiological and psychological effects.
