TMJ and TMD get used interchangeably all the time… but they actually mean two different things.
TMJ = the joint.
TMD = the disorder affecting the joint, muscles, or surrounding structures.
When someone says “I have TMJ,” they’re usually describing symptoms like jaw pain, clicking, headaches, facial tension etc.
The reality is that TMD often involves much more than just the joint. Muscles, fascia, tongue posture, airway, and movement patterns can all play a role.
Understanding the difference helps you start asking better questions about what might actually be contributing to your symptoms.
