Athletes and performers are often taught to push through discomfort to succeed. But when the drive to be the best leads to unbalanced training or eating behaviors, stigma and fear of falling behind can make it hard to ask for help. Eating disorders in athletes are frequently overlooked, even though they carry serious mental and physical risks. Greater education and awareness among coaches, families, institutions, and athletes themselves is essential.

Athlete EDGE at EDCare offers specialized eating disorder treatment designed specifically for athletes and performers. Our experienced team helps individuals build recovery-focused skills that support both performance and everyday life. Learn more online and take the next step toward support. www.athleteEDGE.care

Youth athletics can be powerful protective environments, but only when adults are equipped to recognize warning signs and act early.

During Eating Disorders Awareness Week, Mental Health Colorado is proud to partner with Athlete EDGE at EDCare, a specialized eating disorder treatment program for athletes ages 13+ that addresses the significant mental health impact of these illnesses.

Alongside 24/7 crisis support via 988 and free mental health screenings through Mental Health Colorado, we are elevating SB26-060: Youth Coaches Mental Health Education & Concussion Awareness, which empowers coaches with education and strengthens parent notification when concussions may affect emotional well-being.

Prevention, education, and coordinated care work together to protect young athletes — on and off the field.

📝 We’ve published a longer-form blog exploring how SB26-060 connects to Eating Disorders Awareness Week, the intersection of athletics and mental health, and why early education matters.

Mental health and eating disorder concerns don't appear overnight. They often begin with subtle shifts — particularly after injury, concussion, or time away from sport.

Research shows that youth who sustain a concussion face increased risk for emotional and psychological challenges. SB26-060: Youth Coaches Mental Health Education & Concussion Awareness ensures parents are informed when concussions may impact mental health, strengthening early communication.

Mental Health Colorado, through our partnership with Athlete EDGE at EDCare, which provides specialized athlete-centered eating disorder care and coordinated support with families and schools, are reinforcing the importance of early identification before concerns escalate.

Coaches are often the first adults outside the family to notice when something feels off. Their role extends beyond performance — they help shape team culture and athlete identity.

Mental Health Colorado, in partnership with Athlete EDGE at EDCare, a specialized eating disorder treatment program for athletes ages 13+, are elevating SB26-060: Youth Coaches Mental Health Education and Concussion Awareness, recognizing the intersection between eating disorders, mental health, and athletics-related injury.

The bill requires annual mental health education for coaches of youth athletes and strengthens communication around concussion-related mental health risks.

Education equips trusted adults. Informed coaches protect young athletes.
