Just months after starting preschool, 4-year-old Tao began falling asleep in class, developed persistent fevers and experienced pain so severe he couldn’t walk. Though initially told it was “just a virus” or “growing pains,” his mom, Ceniña, trusted her instincts and sought a second opinion — a decision that changed everything.

The doctors felt enlarged lymph nodes and an enlarged spleen. Tests revealed blasts in Tao's blood. Which led to the diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). He was rushed to HCA HealthONE Rocky Mountain Children’s, where our specialized pediatric oncology team began immediate, lifesaving care.

For nearly two years, Tao and his family traveled between Gillette, Wyoming, and Denver for treatment, supported every step of the way by our compassionate, multidisciplinary care team.

Today, Tao is in the maintenance phase of treatment — taking medication at home, returning monthly for care and looking forward to getting back to preschool and “just being a normal kid again.”

On , we honor children like Tao and the teams whose expertise and dedication make more tomorrows possible.

When a patient shared how anxious and overwhelmed they felt when arriving on the unit, Nora showed up. With her warm smile, calming presence, and commitment to maintaining a safe environment, Nora transformed fear into comfort.

She didn’t just clean a room — she created a healing space and protected a vulnerable patient from infection risks. The patient later wrote, “Nora’s role was just as critical to my success as the healthcare providers, keeping me safe from germs.”

Her compassion, attention to detail and ability to anticipate needs uplift not only our patients, but also our her colleagues. Nora embodies excellence which is why she has been selected as a national winner of the Cintas Corporation C.A.P.E. Award, one of only about 10 recipients across the country. This recognition honors EVS professionals who elevate the patient experience — and Nora does exactly that. Congratulations, Nora! Thank you for the lifesaving work you do and for making a meaningful difference for our patients every single day.

This arctic blast is serious — doctors are saying frostbite can set in within minutes when skin is exposed. Even quick trips outside can add up faster than you think.

A few easy ways to stay safe:
• Layer up and cover exposed skin (hands, ears, face especially) 🧤🧣
• Limit time outside when temps and wind chills are brutal
• Watch for numbness or pale/waxy skin — those can be early frostbite signs
• Bring pets inside and check on neighbors who may need help
