The risk of major complications for patients undergoing hand-assisted laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy was minimal. Only 2.5% of the over 3,000 kidney donors studied experienced major complications, and all recovered completely. Most complications, such as an infection or hernia related to the incision, occurred after discharge, suggesting the need for close follow-up.

To study the complications of hand-assisted laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy (HALLDN) with an emphasis on complications occurring early after hospital discharge up to 120 days after surgery.

When compared with neostigmine, sugammadex resulted in faster recovery of rocuronium-induced neuromuscular block in patients undergoing lung cancer resection. Sugammadex administration also reduced the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications and the duration of postoperative hospital stay. Readmission rates did not differ between the two groups.

This study aimed to compare the effect of sugammadex and neostigmine on neuromuscular block (NMB) reversal and the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications in patients undergoing lung cancer resection.

A randomized clinical trial found that combining liposomal bupivacaine and bupivacaine hydrochloride was not more effective than bupivacaine hydrochloride alone. For patients undergoing knee replacement surgery, the two methods resulted in similar postoperative recovery and pain. Liposomal bupivacaine was also not found to be cost-effective.

This randomized clinical trial assesses the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of liposomal bupivacaine plus bupivacaine hydrochloride compared with bupivacaine hydrochloride alone for postoperative recovery and pain management among patients undergoing knee replacement.

Due to a shortage of traditional ICU technical ventilators during COVID-19, anesthesia machines were used an alternative, which were found to be inadequate to provide long-term critical care to COVID-19 patients. While disease severity and treatment intensity were comparable, the 60-day mortality was significantly higher in the participant group using anesthesia machines. Several incidents and complications were also reported, showing the needed for added safety considerations.

A Quick Test of Cognitive Speed (AQT) was found to have similar accuracy of predicting delirium following cardiac surgery compared to Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The addition of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale as well as cardiopulmonary bypass-time improved the predictive power of the tests. Thus, including preoperative tests for condition and symptoms of depression can be useful for identifying patients at higher risk of postoperative delirium.

Between 2014 and 2017, the number of Americans under the age of 18 who were prescribed narcotics after surgery decreased. Opioid prescriptions in the study group dropped from 78% to 48% for adolescents, from 54% to 25.5% among school-aged children, and from 30% to 11.5% for preschool-aged children. The CDC continues to encourage doctors to prioritize non-opioid alternatives.

New research shows that between 2014 and 2017 fewer Americans under the age of 18 were prescribed narcotics for surgical pain, and these numbers dropped even more rapidly beginning in late 2017.

A gene-therapy gel succeeded in helping wounds heal and remain healed for the 9 participants included in the clinical trial. The gel was developed for epidermolysis bullosa, a blistering skin disease, and works by delivering a modified herpes simplex virus that has been genetically engineered to not replicate or spread. It was topically applied in short, weekly outpatient clinic visits during regular bandage changes.

Stanford researchers have been working on gene therapies for epidermolysis bullosa, or “butterfly disease,” for over a decade. A new gel helped wounds heal and stay healed in a clinical trial.

COVID-19 mRNA vaccines were proven to be effective in preventing the most severe forms of COVID-19. Receiving 2 or 3 doses of the vaccine was associated with a 90% reduction in risk for invasive technical ventilation or death due to COVID-19. Even during the period of Omicron predominance, the protection of 3 mRNA vaccine doses was 94%. Thus, the CDC recommends that all eligible persons stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccination.

GE Healthcare has received FDA pre-market approval for its End-tidal (Et) Control software to help automate anesthesia delivery. Anesthesia providers set targets for end-tidal oxygen and anesthetic concentrations, which the software then maintains regardless of changes in the patient’s hemodynamic and metabolic status. The Et Control software was associated with a 44% decline in greenhouse gas emissions and 27% reduction in operating room costs.

GE Healthcare received FDA approval of first-ever software to help automate anesthesia delivery and reduce greenhouse gas emissions during surgery.

04/08/2022

Breast arterial calcification was found to be a useful warning sign for primary cardiovascular disease prevention among post-menopausal women. Mammography screenings often lead to the detection of breast arterial calcification, suggesting the utility of routine mammograms in detecting cardiovascular risk. Currently, women between the ages of 50 and 74 years are recommended to have routine screenings every two years.

Background: Breast arterial calcification (BAC), a common incidental finding in mammography, has been shown to be associated with angiographic coronary artery disease and cardiovascular disease (CVD)

The level of neuromuscular block measured at the upper arm by compressomyography and at the adductor pollicis muscle measured by electromyography was found to be different. The measurements were made at various stages of neuromuscular block in obese and non-obese patients. The TOF-Cuff compressomyograph overestimates spontaneous neuromuscular block recovery, which can create a risk of extubation when the block has not been fully reversed.

Quantitative neuromuscular monitoring is traditionally evaluated at the adductor pollicis muscle. By contrast, the TOF-Cuff compressomyograph evaluate…

The FDA has issued a Class I recall for certain Philips Respironics V60 and V60 Plus Ventilators due to an expired adhesive that may cause the ventilators to stop working. The adhesive failing could potentially loosen and damage a capacitor support bracket. The ventilators are intended to support patient breathing by providing mechanical ventilation.

Certain Philips Respironics V60 and V60 Plus ventilators recalled due to expired adhesive that may cause ventilator to stop delivering ventilation.
