This one is personal for me. After spending most of my twenties in a cycle of injuries, surgeries, recoveries, and reinjuries, my life had become about avoiding pain and avoiding circumstances that might lead to it. So I stopped running, stopped skiing, and lived in fear. Became a PT to learn how to better prevent injury. Learned about the realities (and shortcomings) of rehab.
Then one day (thanks to ) I decided, essentially on a whim, to try lifting a bar. Long story short and many lifts later, I’ve resumed running, skiing, and backpacking again - all things I’d written off in the name of “injury prevention”. I started teaching more of my patients to pick up heavy things, and saw how transformational it could be, especially for folks who have been marginalized, taught to fear their own bodies, and discouraged from challenging themselves in the name of self-protection.
The jury is in on this one folks; learning how to pick up heavy things can have positive impact on just about every single aspect of your life. If you’re curious about how getting stronger can make just about everything better (and if you’ve made it this far!) my lines are always open.
