That question, “Is this burnout or is this depression?” comes up often in my work with high-achieving women.
It matters because burnout and depression can look almost identical from the outside.
You are still showing up. Still meeting deadlines. Still holding everything together. But inside, something has felt off for a while, and you cannot quite name it.
The difference is not just clinical. It changes what kind of support will actually help.
Burnout is often responsive to rest, even if only temporarily. Step away from the pressure and something shifts.
Depression follows you. It is there on vacation, on a quiet Saturday morning, and in the middle of dinner with people you love.
One of the clearest signs I see is how long women have been explaining it away:
- a hard year
- a demanding role
- a difficult period or life stage that just has not let up
At some point, that stops being perspective and starts becoming a coping pattern.
If you have been feeling unlike yourself for a while and cannot quite shake it, that is worth paying attention to.
I just published a full breakdown on this for anyone sitting with that question right now. It covers what each one can actually feel like, how to tell them apart, and what to do when you are not sure.
