To close out Parkinson’s Awareness Month, Maya wanted to leave you with one powerful reminder. Parkinson’s is progressive — but that doesn’t mean decline is inevitable. The most important message we share with our patients:

You are not powerless.

Here’s what makes the biggest difference long-term:

💜 Consistency with exercise
💜 Strength training at least 2–3x/week
💜 Challenging balance regularly
💜 Staying socially engaged
💜 Working with providers who understand Parkinson’s

Physical therapy isn’t just about exercises. It’s about preserving independence, confidence, and quality of life. If you or someone you love has Parkinson’s, don’t wait until symptoms worsen to seek help. Early intervention matters.

We’re here to help you keep moving!

We’re so grateful for patients who trust their care to Blue Sky Physical Therapy. Take a look at this kind review highlighting the dedication of our therapists Hillary Joseph, PT, MPT, COMT and Erin Mack, PT, DPT:

"I highly recommend Blue Sky PT! From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed and cared for. The entire staff is professional, friendly and truly dedicated to helping their patients heal and improve. My physical therapists (Hillary and Erin) were incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to understand my needs and goals. They explained every exercise clearly and made sure I was doing everything safely and effectively. I saw noticeable improvement in my mobility and pain levels within a few sessions. If you're looking for a compassionate, skilled, and results-driven physical therapy team, Blue Sky Physical Therapy is the place to go. You can tell they genuinely care about their patients and take pride in what they do." Tia H.

The Importance of Physical Therapy After Surgery

The Importance of Physical Therapy After Surgery

Understand how post-surgery physical therapy improves movement and prevents complications with structured strength training.

04/20/2026

For tip # 3 this Parkinson’s Awareness Month, Maya, PT, DPT highlights one of the most important concepts in Parkinson’s therapy: moving BIG. Parkinson’s often causes movements to become smaller and slower over time. The tricky part? It can feel normal to the person experiencing it.

That’s why we train exaggeration.

Try this:
✔️ Use visual cues (reach for an object when sitting or standing; step over a line or object while walking)
✔️ Lift your knees higher than you think you need to
✔️ Count out loud while walking

For freezing episodes:
🔹 Stop
🔹 Take a breath
🔹 Shift your weight
🔹 Step BIG in one direction

Physical therapy helps retrain the brain-body connection so movement feels more natural again. Small movements aren’t enough — think BIG.

We're back with a second tip from Maya, PT, DPT for Parkinson's Awareness Month. 💜

One of the biggest concerns with Parkinson’s is falling.

Changes in posture, slower reactions, and smaller steps can increase fall risk — but there are ways to train your balance safely.

Here are 2 simple exercises we teach our patients:

1️⃣ Standing with feet together
2️⃣ Tandem stance (one foot directly in front of the other, heel to toe)

Try these with a support surface nearby, and have someone with you if needed. You can increase the challenge by crossing your arms in front of your chest.

Balance is trainable — and the earlier you start, the better.

✨ Patient Success Story ✨

Every recovery journey is unique—but stories like this remind us why personalized care and trusting the process matter so much.

We’re proud to share Derek’s full experience working with Blake, PT, DPT, ATC and how the right physical therapy approach helped him avoid surgery and get back to doing what he loves.

⬇️ Read his full story below ⬇️

"I had the pleasure of working with Blake Pepper, who helped me recover from a torn shoulder. After two doctors said I needed surgery—but still required physical therapy to qualify for insurance coverage—Blake took the time to evaluate my injury and confidently explained that with the right PT, I could likely heal without surgery. At first, I was ready to have him discharge me so I could move forward with the 9–12 month surgical recovery process. Instead, I decided to trust his expertise and follow his plan. I’m incredibly glad I did—I’m now fully recovered!
Thank you, Blake, for guiding me back to lifting overhead like I could before the injury and for helping me avoid the extra time, cost, and stress of surgery. Your knowledge and support made all the difference." - Derek H.
