Caregivers who support family members with chronic conditions tend to live longer than non-caregivers — even though caregiving can be stressful. Researchers at Johns Hopkins looked at health data over several years and found that people who regularly care for loved ones had about nine extra months of life expectancy, with no increase in chronic health problems compared with non-caregivers. This suggests that caregiving, despite its challenges, may offer surprising health benefits and deeper life purpose.
David Whye talks about his experience caring for his wife Arleen who has limited mobility. He uses meditation and his love of bird watching to keep himself healthy so he can be a better caregiver to his wife. David finds caregiving rewarding through his wife's gratitude and smile.
