Western Care Partners

Western Care Partners Guidance and support for those helping an aging loved one. It is a daunting task to set up care for a parent, spouse or friend who's getting older.

“People want to do the best thing for their loved ones and they don't know where to start.”
— Jill Eelkema, Founder

What We Do - Western Care Partners guides families of aging loved ones through the plethora of resources available to them. There are a number of issues that come up when families realized their loved one needs more help than they can provide. We provide individualized navigation and emotional guidance so that families can make their best decisions for an aging loved one. We want to do the best thing but it's hard to know where to start. Traditionally, case managers focus on services, and counselors deal with emotions but at Western Care Partners, we believe you make the best decisions when you have both. Western Care Partners helps families navigate the tasks and emotions that come with helping an aging loved one.

Caregivers who support family members with chronic conditions tend to live longer than non-caregivers — even though caregiving can be stressful. Researchers at Johns Hopkins looked at health data over several years and found that people who regularly care for loved ones had about nine extra months of life expectancy, with no increase in chronic health problems compared with non-caregivers. This suggests that caregiving, despite its challenges, may offer surprising health benefits and deeper life purpose.

David Whye talks about his experience caring for his wife Arleen who has limited mobility. He uses meditation and his love of bird watching to keep himself healthy so he can be a better caregiver to his wife. David finds caregiving rewarding through his wife's gratitude and smile.

Western Care Partners FAQ: HOW OFTEN DO WE MEET? We begin with a complimentary consultation call, completely free of charge. From there, we either schedule a psychotherapy session, a care management consultation or a family assessment meeting. For psychotherapy, a lot of people prefer to meet 1x/week at first and then spread their sessions out down the road.

Caregiving can be emotionally intense, and even the most loving caregivers will face moments of conflict or agitation. Experts say the key is not to avoid these challenges — it’s to handle them with calm, compassion, and clarity.

Here are some practical strategies:

✨ Stay calm — your steadiness helps soothe the situation.
✨ Encourage sitting and deep breaths to ease stress.
✨ Affirm that you care and avoid assumptions about why they’re upset.
✨ Use gentle distractions (like a favorite treat) to shift focus.
✨ Take a respectful break and return when both are calmer.
✨ Offer choices instead of directives to preserve dignity.
✨ Communicate openly later about what helps next time.
✨ Say you’re sorry when needed — even a brief apology can reset tension.

💡 Remember: anger or distress isn’t usually about you — it’s often frustration with illness, change, or loss of control. Responding with empathy makes all the difference.

Caring for a loved one with dementia can be heartbreaking — especially when the person you care for starts yelling or lashing out due to confusion or frustration. These behaviors are often symptoms of the disease, not personal attacks. Care partners are encouraged to stay calm, use gentle reassurance, and redirect attention when possible. Understanding the condition and talking with healthcare professionals about strategies (including behavioral approaches and, in some cases, medications) can help make tough moments a little easier.
