By this point, you may have heard the term “EMDR,” but how does it work?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a trauma-informed therapy that helps the brain process distressing memories in a new way.

It can be helpful for:

• Trauma & PTSD

• Anxiety

• Negative self-beliefs

• Past experiences that still feel “stuck”

You don’t have to relive everything to heal. EMDR can help your nervous system move forward, often more quickly than with talk therapy alone.

Dry January can be a fun trend to start the year off with and as the month goes on, provides an opportunity to be curious about drinking and the role alcohol plays in your life.

This month-long committment can bring up reflection, discomfort, clarity, or questions.

👉 For those of you who have given it a go this month, what are you noticing? Is it easier than you thought? Do you find yourself thiking about alcohol more or less?

Dry January can be an invitation to look at your relationship with alcohol and the role it plays in your life. Most people don’t come to therapy to talk about alcohol use, and it might be worth exploring as alcohol has varying degrees of impact on our lives.

If you’re struggling with alcohol or are curious about making shifts in your relationship with it, therapy can be a helpful place to explore that - without shame.

🎧️The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a gentle, sound-based approach that helps the nervous system settle after long periods of overwhelm, stress, or shutdown.

Using filtered music that works with the vagus nerve, SSP helps kids, teens, and adults move from constant activation back into safety and connection.

In our new blog post, we break down what SSP is, how it works, and why so many people benefit from going slow.

We also share Certified SSP provider, Emily Hennes', personal experience using SSP with her daughter, and how small shifts in the nervous system can create big changes in daily life.

🤍 clearer thinking
🤍 fewer shutdowns
🤍 better sleep
🤍 easier digestion
🤍 more capacity to stay present

As Emily says, “When your body learns to tell the difference between real and perceived danger, everything shifts.”

If you’re curious about how SSP supports kids, teens, or adults, or whether it might be a helpful step before trauma work, you can read the full article here: https://denvermetrocounseling.com/finding-calm-through-sound-the-safe-and-sound-protocol

👋Hey therapists! We see you.

Not just who you are as a therapist, but how you shine, extend yourself, and stay rooted in this work.

We have supported therapists at all different levels of training and experience and know the power of being in community, being seen, and being held in a confidential way.

We envision a thriving community of therapists who show up fully, collaborate often, and bring embodied awareness into their practice and their life outside of this work.

Whether you’re seeking therapy for yourself, consultation to support you with a case, or experiential growth in connection with peers, here’s how we roll:

👉🏼Therapy for therapists—yes, you deserve the same care you offer (we walk this route ourselves).

👉🏼As needed clinical consultation & monthly EMDR consultation (1:1 or group), family therapy consultation group

👉🏼Two supportive experiential groups to help you grow deeper as a therapist and human: our Rooted Therapist Consultation Group and our MindBody Experiential Process Learning Group that honor your nervous system, your body, and your whole self-of-therapist.

👉🏼Really awesome networking events and training for our community.

👉🏼And we pay you to teach us! (Recent favorites 👏🏼 👏🏼)

You’re not alone in this. At DMC we’re therapists who support therapists.

Reach out! We’d love to connect with you. 🥰

😞 Sometimes the body spends so long in fight-or-flight that it eventually gives out and shifts into shutdown, numbness, or disconnection.

It’s not weakness.

It’s the nervous system doing its best to protect you. 💞

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) can gently help people move out of that shutdown state and back into connection at a pace that feels tolerable.

🎧️ Using filtered music and short listening sessions, SSP supports the vagus nerve helping the body relearn safety, settle more easily, and respond rather than react.

Whether you’re an adult feeling overwhelmed, a teen who’s constantly “on,” or a child who gets overstimulated by sounds or sensations, SSP offers a gentle pathway back toward regulation.

If you’re curious whether SSP might be supportive, we’re here to talk through it with you.

We offer SSP throughout the US.

Reach out to schedule a free consultation with our Certified SSP Provider today.

Gratitude doesn’t erase struggle.

It simply helps widen the frame so you can see more than the difficult moment you’re in.

Holding both can support emotional regulation and deepen resilience.

Today, what’s one “both/and” moment you’re noticing?

✨️Clients often describe Ketamine-Assisted EMDR as softer, more spacious, and more accessible than EMDR alone.

With ketamine calming the nervous system, the brain can reprocess memories and emotions with more clarity, compassion, and distance.

If you’re curious about how this approach might support you or someone you work with, we’re happy to answer questions and help you explore the next steps.

✨️To learn more about how Ketamine and EMDR therapies combined can deepen healing, read our latest post by EMDR and KAP therapist, Lauren Battista. (Link in our bio) 🙂

💫When EMDR and ketamine therapy come together, people often describe the process as softer and more accessible.

Ketamine calms the nervous system just enough for EMDR to help the brain update old patterns and release what feels stuck.

If you’re curious about how this approach may support your healing, we’re here to help you explore it at your own pace.

Reach out today to schedule a free consultation with one of our EMDR trained KAP therapists today.

🧠 Many people only associate OCD with tidiness, but it's far more complex and deeply neurological.

OCD isn’t about neatness or preferences it’s a brain-based cycle driven by overactive threat-detection circuits.

In our latest blog post, we cover how OCD affects the brain.

When regions (with big names) like the orbitofrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, and caudate nucleus misfire, your brain sends repeated alarms… even when you know you’re safe.

This is why intrusive thoughts feel so real and why compulsions feel momentarily calming.

Your brain thinks the cycle is keeping you safe.

The hopeful part? Your brain can change. With the right support, these circuits can learn to quiet down, shift out of the loop, and move toward more freedom from the cycle.

If OCD has you feeling stuck, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

At DMC our OCD therapist helps people navigating this life altering cycle with effective treatments for OCD.

🗣️OCD can feel like an internal alarm system that goes off again and again.

Compulsions (checking, reviewing, repeating) bring a wave of relief, but only for a moment.

🚨Then the alarm sounds louder.🚨

ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) creates space inside that cycle.

Instead of doing the thing your brain insists you must do, you practice sitting with the discomfort long enough for your body to learn the threat isn’t real.

Over time, the alarm softens.

When the urge to avoid shows up - that spike of fear or doubt urging you to act - there’s a small pause where a different choice is possible.

⭐️That pause is the invitation.⭐️

To learn more about treating OCD with evidenced-based ERP, reach out to schedule a consult with OCD specialist at Denver Metro Counseling, Quin Axelson today.
