How do I approach eating on thanksgiving? I… eat.
I don’t do anything special or “health conscious” just because I do this for a living. But I understand not everyone has the same relationship with food and the holidays like that. It can be a difficult mindset to adopt.
So before we log off our phones and dive into the baking, cooking, traveling, eating, (and potential anxiety that may come with it), I want to remind you of something important.
✨ You don’t owe anyone an explanation for what’s on your plate. ✨
The holidays are already stressful enough without the added pressure of food shaming or body comments. Yet, it happens all the time… especially to women.
“Are you sure you need seconds?”
“Wow, treating yourself today, huh?”
“Still on that diet?”
“Why don’t you eat more?”
These comments don’t just sting, they can leave lasting scars. Think about it, would your family be just as likely to inquire why your male cousin is going for a second slice of pie? No? Then why is it okay to ask you?
Would they judge you more if you stick to smaller portion sizes or if you ate as much as you wanted, including the indulgences?
You’re allowed to eat the pie (even the second piece). You’re allowed to say no to it, too. Your body and your choices are not up for debate and you have every right to set boundaries. Here’s how I navigate Thanksgiving:
1️⃣ I eat what I want.
No tracking, no weighing, no stressing over how much butter went into the mashed potatoes. Food is meant to be enjoyed.
2️⃣ I shut down the noise.
Thankfully, my family doesn’t really do this BUT in the past, if someone commented on my food or body, I respond kindly but firmly: “I’m happy with my choices, thanks.”
3️⃣ I focus on what really matters.
Thanksgiving is about gratitude, connection, and creating memories, not micromanaging calories.
One meal won’t undo your progress. But letting shame or guilt dictate your choices? That can hurt your mental and emotional health in ways that last far beyond the holidays.
So this year, eat the pie, hug your family, and don’t let anyone’s opinion about your body or your choices ruin the day. You are enough exactly as you are. ♥️
