The Eating Disorder Foundation

The Eating Disorder Foundation Nonprofit providing free, non-clinical peer-support services to those impacted by eating disorders

Support groups: Our support groups are at the heart of the EDF program, providing safe places for those with eating disorders and their families to grow and to learn from one another. EDF’s support groups are offered on a drop-in basis and are free of charge. These groups not only have helped many who are touched by eating disorders, but also have served as a springboard from which lasting, supportive friendships have grown. Education and outreach: EDF’s efforts include age-specific presentations about body image and eating disorders given free of charge to schools and community organizations throughout Colorado. We exhibit at professional conferences and health fairs for school nurses, counselors, and coaches associations, to name a few. EDF also hosts networking & educational events for eating disorder treatment professionals in the community as a way for these dedicated professionals to connect to their peers, share resources and expertise. Mentorship: Our mentorship program matches qualified mentors with someone who is in need of a little extra help on their path to recovery. EDF mentors provide one-on-one support and act as a role model to their mentee, while encouraging recovery by using healthy coping strategies.

The holidays can be especially complicated for LGBTQ+ folks—especially when food, family, identity, and expectations collide.

Eating disorders disproportionately impact parts of the LGBTQ+ community, and no one should have to navigate that alone.

If you’re looking for support this season, EDF offers a welcoming, open-door space with drop-in support, groups, resources, and more. Just be sure to check our website calendar in case of holiday-related schedule changes!

We thought you would want to see the impact your support has made in the community over the past year:

Since last December, 1,273 new people have attended our support groups for the first time, and another thousand joined our community through other programs.

In our organization-wide surveys, 3 out of 4 of respondents reported significant positive change since coming to EDF. More than half of our members keep coming back for our support for more than a year. And, of all individuals served at EDF, 89% reported accessing some form of treatment, compared to an estimated 20% nationwide.

We’re pretty excited about expanding our educational reach—especially into schools and communities that had never before received eating disorder education. Funding from Aerie Real Foundation made it possible to double our school presentation reach!

This year’s “Roast of Diet Culture” brought together some of Denver’s funniest comedians and a packed room of community members ready to laugh with us—and at diet culture. In honor of Eating Disorders Awareness Week, our comedy-style roast transformed humor into healing, helping attendees challenge harmful norms while supporting EDF’s mission.

In June, members of EDF's community were featured in the New York Times, highlighting the often-missed but critical issue of eating disorders later in life. Did you know that 22% of our support group members are over the age of 50, and our 50+ support group is our most popular program?

One of this year’s biggest behind-the-scenes wins was EDF’s transition to a new database system—a project that may not sound exciting, but is absolutely essential to keeping our free programs running smoothly. Thanks to the flexibility of gifts from supporters like you, we were able to invest in better tools that make it easier for community members to sign up for support groups, receive resources right away, stay connected, and get the help they need without barriers.

Keep an eye out for new, exciting, and powerful programs coming to your community in the next year!

We love seeing the support members of our community have shown for one another. Each day, the smallest actions can have the biggest impact.

Our mission is to be an effective resource in the prevention and elimination of eating disorders through education, support and advocacy. We are able to do this because of a committed volunteer force, focused fundraising efforts, generous donors and an unshakeable dedication to those we serve.
