We offer food distribution programming and educational opportunities related to growing and cooking food, as well as overall wellness. We strive to be a community-driven organization, meaning that our goal is to have all programs led and implemented by members of our community or others from similar neighborhoods. We are successful when the youth, families, and communities we work with are empowered to feed, nourish and strengthen themselves and each other.

The GrowHaus is a proud partner of Hunger Free Colorado through its SNAP PEAs (Partners Engaging in Application Services) program. Through this program, our team members assist community members in applying for SNAP benefits, helping reduce barriers like complex applications and stigma.
Last month, Tania, a Promotora and SNAP Specialist, completed 17 assisted applications - a record number for The GrowHaus! Tania brings incredible patience and kindness to every client interaction, and through her support, more Denver households are receiving funds to purchase food. Congratulations on this milestone, Tania!

Fannie Lou Hamer was a prominent civil rights leader of the 1960s and ‘70s, whose activism extended into food justice. In 1969, she established the Freedom Farm Cooperative (FCC), which aimed to make land accessible to Black farmers at a time when the government was systematically oppressing their livelihood by restricting loans, as well as to provide food, housing, education, and employment for marginalized local communities. Located in the Mississippi Delta, one of the most food-insecure counties in the nation at the time, the FCC was a program of resistance that supported thousands of families in meeting their fundamental needs and achieving self-sufficiency.

Over the years, the FCC expanded to include community gardens, a commercial kitchen, a job training center, and more. Fannie Lou Hamer was a trailblazer in the justice landscape, fearlessly supporting her community and explicitly addressing the connection between social, economic, and food justice. The intersection of these issues remains strong to this day, which is why The GrowHaus transcends food access and offers career and leadership development opportunities to build sustainable, generational economic security and community wealth.

Did you know that fresh green garbanzo beans grow just one per pod? This very special ingredient has been taking the spotlight in our recent no-cost food offerings!
These are the early crop, and have a sweet, grassy, and nutty flavor. Harvested in late spring/early summer, these nutritious, high-protein legumes are often sold still in their fuzzy pods and are frequently charred or boiled as a snack, similar to edamame. They are packed with fiber, plant-based protein, and vitamins. Swipe for a simple recipe for Pan-Roasted Guasanas (Mexican-Style Fresh Garbanzos), a common snack in Mexico.

Statewide data shows that Black and Latino households are about twice as likely to experience food insecurity as their white counterparts. This disparity highlights the many ways race, income, and other demographic factors intersect to drive food insecurity and overburden low-income communities of color. The GrowHaus addresses this gap in practical, sustainable ways, with culturally relevant food access and education programs shaped by our team of community leaders, many of whom have firsthand experience with food insecurity. On World Day of Social Justice, invest in community-led solutions by making a gift to The GrowHaus at bit.ly/donateTGH.

The GrowHaus’ Promotoras recently launched a new overnight oats home visit curriculum after learning that neighbors were interested in quick, nutritious breakfast ideas. This simple, low-cost recipe combines fiber-packed old-fashioned oats and chia seeds with milk, a dash of cinnamon, and a touch of maple syrup. This recipe can be easily customized to different flavor and texture preferences and made ahead of time, which is perfect for busy families!

In his work as a celebrated chef, cookbook author, educator, and activist, Bryant Terry bridges food, culture, and health equity. Early in his role in the food system, Terry noticed that the food justice movement was not organized by those who were actually experiencing food insecurity. To address this gap, Terry founded B-Healthy, a youth outreach program to engage young people in food justice issues. Through this program, Terry helped equip young leaders directly affected by food insecurity with the knowledge and skills to advance food justice, build connections around food, and take control of their health.
The GrowHaus runs a similar program for emerging teen leaders, called Seed2Seed. To help foster the next generation of community leaders in the food justice space and beyond, Seed2Seed engages local teens in our food system, teaches lifelong leadership skills, and helps build healthy habits.

To strengthen The GrowHaus’ Seed2Seed teen leadership development program and our year-round support of emerging leaders, The GrowHaus recently hosted a Youth Advisory Council (YAC) meeting, comprised of past Seed2Seed students. Youth shared feedback on the program’s curriculum and reflected on the successes and challenges of their experience. Students also discussed how they continue to demonstrate leadership, pursue professional growth, and sharpen new skills in their lives after Seed2Seed. Our Wellness Education team is already incorporating takeaways from this meeting into the design of the 2026 Seed2Seed curriculum.
It always moves us to hear the impact that Seed2Seed has on teens. One student said that, since participating, “I have more confidence to cook and speak out my own ideas.” The YAC is a powerful platform for youth voice, refining Seed2Seed's effectiveness year after year and ultimately supporting more teens in learning about food justice, healthy cooking, wellness habits, and launching meaningful career paths.

Lack of access to healthy food leads to physical and mental health challenges and hinders a child’s ability to learn in school. The Black Panther Party, a revolutionary Black Power organization, was a catalyst in providing nutritious, free breakfast to children, specifically Black children disproportionately affected by food access barriers. Launched in 1969, the Free Breakfast for School Children program was an essential facet of the BPP’s social programs and fed tens of thousands of children throughout its existence.
Though the program was dismantled due to systemic attacks on the BPP, it gained public visibility, put significant pressure on political leaders to support children's success by nourishing them before school, and served as a critical precursor to the federal free school meals programs we have today. The GrowHaus builds on the important legacy of this work, positioning food access as foundational to wellness, and bridging the nutrition gap for families by providing healthy after-school snacks and fresh food for dinners, weekends, and school breaks.

Peppers are a staple item of The GrowHaus food access program. Bell peppers, Poblanos, Anaheims, Jalapeños, the list goes on! Packed with Vitamin A and C, antioxidants, and fiber, peppers offer essential nutrients that, when paired with other produce and food groups, support the health of our neighbors. Interestingly, a 2020 study in the American Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that a diet rich in spicy peppers was associated with lower obesity, heart disease, and diabetes risk, due to the chemical compound capsaicin.
Offering a wide range of culturally meaningful pepper varieties allows our food access participants to prepare their favorite dishes while supporting healthy eating habits.

During this challenging time for our country and communities, many of us are eager to support our neighbors in tangible ways. The GrowHaus' special group of monthly donors, También, is doing just that. Through recurring donations (whether $10 or $100/month), También members provide reliable funding streams supporting our food access, education, and leadership programs, which reach 7,000 people across Denver. The reliability of También donations increases The GrowHaus' capacity to budget, plan, and quickly respond to changing community needs. Our También members believe in the power of community-led solutions to dismantle systemic injustices and show up month after month in solidarity with our neighbors.
Seshu, one of our most fervent supporters and También members, has shared why this program is so meaningful to him. He says, "What brought us to the GrowHaus was food. My family loves good, healthy food… But what kept me in También is community. It's a sense of friendship, camaraderie, of meeting other people, that now brings us together." He adds, "It's not just about the donation that you make, but it's about that impact you can have on somebody else's life." Join También today at bit.ly/jointambien and become part of a powerful community of food justice supporters.
