You finally have a break in your day and are playing with your child—until a tantrum, aggression, or defiance takes over. You may find yourself asking, “Why is it so difficult to play with my child?”

For some children, playtime becomes an opportunity for attention-seeking behaviors or a time when emotions feel overwhelming. They may struggle with anger, anxiety, or excessive crying. At the same time, parents may unknowingly reinforce these behaviors.

Our Pediatric Behavioral Health program offers Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), an evidence-based behavioral intervention for children ages three to seven and their parents, foster parents, or caregivers. PCIT helps reduce negative behaviors by strengthening a parent’s ability to manage them.

“PCIT helps foster a warm relationship between a parent and child,” says Mount Saint Vincent Licensed Professional Counselor, Jasper Avery. “When children display difficult behaviors, parents may struggle with basic play skills. PCIT teaches parents how to create short, focused, high-quality special time with their child.”

PCIT relies on observation and real-time coaching. The parent and child play in an observation room while a licensed clinician watches via live video from an adjacent room. The parent wears headphones and receives guidance during the session.

Three initial observations help guide treatment: the child leading play, the parent leading play, and the parent asking the child to clean up—often a challenging moment that offers valuable insight.

“It can feel vulnerable to watch your child have a meltdown,” explains Jasper. “We reassure parents that we’re not judging—we’re learning how to best support both the child and the caregiver.”

Wondering if PCIT is right for your child? Call our Admissions Team at (303) 318-1758 to start the conversation.

Outpatient therapy appointments are available Monday–Thursday from 8 a.m.–7 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m.–4 p.m. We accept most major insurance plans and Medicaid. Learn more:

The students in our Day Treatment and Education Program enjoyed a beautiful fall day at the movies, watching Disney Pixar’s Inside Out 2! They even used their hard-earned “MSV bucks” to buy treats at the concession stand — a sweet reward for their hard work and positive choices. 🍿✨

Mount Saint Vincent’s Day Treatment and Education Program provides children with mental health and behavioral challenges the support they need to reach their therapeutic and educational goals. Through individualized education plans, therapy, and skill-building, our staff helps each child reach their full potential. 💙

About Mount Saint Vincent

Mount Saint Vincent was founded on February 15, 1883 by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth. In the spirit of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, Mount Saint Vincent strengthens the abilities of families and children to emotionally and socially participate in the community, making life better for generations to come. Committed to providing compassionate care, we strive to produce positive, life changing results.

Mount Saint Vincent is a Denver, Colorado-based treatment center for children aged 5 to 12 who face severe behavioral and emotional challenges due to trauma, mental illness, abuse, or neglect. We specialize in delivering behavioral health services to children and their families, helping children reach their full potential within their homes, schools, and communities. At Mount Saint Vincent, our approach to care is based upon the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics, a trauma-informed model that builds upon a child’s strengths. For more than 45 years, we have helped hundreds of children improve their functioning, unlocking their potential to succeed. We are child-focused but also family-centered, believing that building on individual and family strengths results in happy children and healthy families. Complementary therapies like art, animal-assisted, dance/movement, and music allow young children to express themselves non-verbally. These gentle, nonthreatening approaches help children feel safe as they learn to trust, form relationships, self-regulate, and eventually re-integrate into society.

Mount Saint Vincent was named a Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT) flagship site in July of 2012. The trauma-informed NMT model was developed by world-renowned child trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry, founder of The ChildTrauma Academy. Mount Saint Vincent is one of a handful of such sites in the world to hold this prestigious distinction.
