D- Describe the situation objectively.
E- Let others know how a situation makes you feel by clearly expressing your feelings.
A- Don’t beat around the bush—say what you need to say.
R- Reward people who respond well, and reinforce why your desired outcome is positive.

M- Don’t forget the objective of the interaction.
A- Appear confident. Consider your posture, tone, eye contact, and body language.
N- No one can have everything they want out of an interaction all the time. Be open to negotiation.

With Valentine's Day coming up we can't help but feel curious about how everyone is feeling in their current relationships (romantic or platonic). Did you know in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) there is an entire series on how we are able to relate to one another and function in healthy relationships?

✨ Interpersonal Effectiveness✨ at its most basic refers to the ability to interact with others. It includes skills we use to (Vivyan, 2015):
👉Attend to relationships
👉Balance priorities versus demands
👉Balance the “wants” and the “shoulds”
👉Build a sense of mastery and self-respect

Our ability to interact with others can be broken by the goal we have in mind for our interactions. There are three main goals to interaction:
👉Gaining our objective
👉Maintaining our relationships
👉Keeping our self-respect

Each goal requires interpersonal skills; while some interpersonal skills will be applied in many situations, some skills will be especially important for achieving one of these goals.

When we are working towards gaining our objective, we need skills that involve clarifying what we want from the interaction, and identifying what we need to do in order to get the results we want.

When maintaining our relationships is our first priority, we need to understand how important the particular relationship is to us, how we want the person to feel about us, and what we need to do in order to keep the relationship going.

Finally, when our goal is to keep our self-respect, we will use interpersonal skills to help us feel the way we would like to feel after the interaction is over and to stick to our values and to the truth (Vivyan, 2015).

Curious about symptoms of bipolar disorder? Let's talk about them:

Symptoms and their severity can vary. A person with bipolar disorder may have distinct manic or depressed states but may also have extended periods—sometimes years—without symptoms. A person can also experience both extremes simultaneously or in rapid sequence.

To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a person must have experienced at least one episode of mania or hypomania. A manic episode is characterized by a sustained period of abnormally elevated or irritable mood, intense energy, racing thoughts, and other extreme and exaggerated behaviors. People can also experience psychosis, including hallucinations and delusions, which indicate a separation from reality

Depression. The lows of bipolar depression are often so debilitating that people may be unable to get out of bed. Typically, people experiencing a depressive episode have difficulty falling and staying asleep, while others sleep far more than usual. When people are depressed, even minor decisions such as what to eat for dinner can be overwhelming. They may become obsessed with feelings of loss, personal failure, guilt or helplessness; this negative thinking can lead to thoughts of su***de.

Let's talk about bipolar disorder 👇

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that causes dramatic shifts in a person’s mood, energy and ability to think clearly. People with bipolar experience high and low moods—known as mania and depression—which differ from the typical ups-and-downs most people experience.

The average age-of-onset is about 25, but it can occur in the teens, or more uncommonly, in childhood. The condition affects men and women equally, with about 2.8% of the U.S. population diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

With a good treatment plan including psychotherapy, medications, a healthy lifestyle, a regular schedule and early identification of symptoms, many people live well with the condition.
