Anchor Center for Blind Children

Anchor Center for Blind Children Anchor Center for Blind Children is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing early intervent

Anchor Center for Blind Children teaches visually impaired infants, young children and their families, providing hope and a nurturing environment where children reach their highest potential. Anchor Center is the only privately funded organization in Colorado (and one of a handful nationwide) that provides early intervention/developmental education services to very young children with visual impai

rment. With an operating budget over $2 million, we rely heavily on individual donations to ensure our programs continue to meet the needs of Colorado’s children with vision loss.

Visionaries Blind Hockey is relaunching its youth program starting May 23rd, with practices continuing throughout the summer. All sessions will take place at 2:00 PM at Big Bear Ice Arena.

A former student has become deeply involved in the program and is especially excited to welcome more students and alumni from Anchor Center for Blind Children. It’s a great opportunity to build skills, connect with peers, and be part of an inclusive, fast-growing sport.

Curiosity, connection, and hands-on learning were on full display yesterday as 4th graders from St. Vincent de Paul School visited Anchor Center for Blind Children for a scavenger hunt experience!

Joined by Guiding Eyes for the Blind, students explored our campus through a series of interactive stations designed to spark discovery and deepen understanding of accessibility. From feeling the truncated domes near the Little Free Library with white canes, to trying out the SwayFun inclusive seesaw, to finding the Letter “F” along our Braille Trail, each stop invited students to learn in meaningful, tactile ways.

The guide dogs helped lead the way from station to station while students also had the opportunity to navigate using canes and walkers. We’re grateful for the energy and openness these students brought, and proud to share spaces that inspire learning, inclusion, and exploration for all.

TREMENDOUS TUESDAYS: MEET HOLLYN

"Since starting last year at Anchor, Hollyn has made tremendous growth and improvement. She began by crawling through the hallways between rotations, and now she is taking multiple steps and doing great in her gait trainer. She has built a significant tolerance for school overall, especially when it comes to transitions. She is now able to attend all three rotations without needing a break in between.

Most importantly, Hollyn has worked hard to strengthen her relationships with teachers and peers. When she first started, she would not make eye contact or acknowledge those around her. Now, she is making sustained eye contact with her teachers and even giving high fives."

— Shelby, Hollyn’s mom

A huge thank you to Feel the Beat Dance for creating a special dance class for Anchor Center's Community Day!

Our students and alumni had an amazing experience filled with movement, connection, and joy. Feel the Beat offers inclusive dance experiences for people of all ages and abilities, using a unique vibrating dance floor to bring the tactile sense into the joy of music.

Dance is so much more than movement. It helps children build early orientation and mobility skills that are essential for navigating and engaging with the world around them. We are so grateful to be part of such a meaningful and inspiring opportunity for our students and community!

Thank you to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science for visiting Anchor Center and sharing your incredible Wild Senses interactive program with our students! 🐾

Our preschoolers had an amazing time exploring the natural world through the eyes (and noses, and paws!) of animals. From sniffing out food like a squirrel, to hunting in the dark like a raccoon, to using their sense of touch to discover insects like spiders, every moment was filled with curiosity, discovery, and joy.

Experiences like this help our students connect with the world in meaningful, sensory-rich ways, and we are so grateful for this opportunity!

TREMENDOUS TUESDAY: MEET JACOB

If you’ve ever walked into Anchor Center in the morning, you’ve probably been greeted by Jacob’s bright smile. As his mum wheels him into school, his joyful energy fills the room—he truly has a way of lifting everyone around him.
Now in his second year of preschool, Jacob has had the chance to connect with even more classmates and teachers. His friends adore him so much that whenever he’s absent, the first thing they do is ask where he is!

Jacob is an incredibly hard‑working learner. He communicates in thoughtful, subtle ways, often through his expressive facial cues or by using his BigMac switches. Even with the physical challenges he faces, he rarely complains and consistently pushes himself beyond expectations. His enthusiasm for learning and his impressive stamina make him such a special part of the classroom.

One of Jacob’s favorite ways to explore is by lying on a wedge so he can use his hands more freely to play and discover alongside his friends. He loves tactile experiences, especially water play and making music, so these are woven into his learning every day. His natural curiosity shines through in everything he does.

Jacob participates fully in all Anchor Center activities. He enjoys playing with friends at the start of the day, joining yoga with the help of an adult (he especially loves the animal poses!), and making choices during circle time. And of course, everyone knows when Jacob is here, he proudly adds his voice to the “welcome to school” song.

Jacob has grown so much during his time at Anchor Center. His ability to learn, apply new skills, and spread happiness wherever he goes makes him a truly beloved part of our community.

Merlin, Jacob's preschool teacher
