Anchor Center for Blind Children

Anchor Center for Blind Children Anchor Center for Blind Children is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing early intervent

Anchor Center for Blind Children teaches visually impaired infants, young children and their families, providing hope and a nurturing environment where children reach their highest potential. Anchor Center is the only privately funded organization in Colorado (and one of a handful nationwide) that provides early intervention/developmental education services to very young children with visual impairment. With an operating budget over $2 million, we rely heavily on individual donations to ensure our programs continue to meet the needs of Colorado’s children with vision loss.

TREMENDOUS TUESDAYS: MEET ROSA

Rosa has been coming to Anchor Center since she was about nine months old and one of our biggest celebrations has been watching her learn to walk. With a diagnosis of Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI), Rosa has worked closely with the Anchor Center team to build the mobility and confidence she needs to navigate the world around her.

Together, her teachers and specialists tried different strategies to support her progress, including spending time in the motor room to build strength and coordination. After a lot of encouragement and practice, Rosa has now been walking for about a year. Anchor Center also helped introduce her to a cane, which gives her more independence when exploring unfamiliar places.

We are so grateful for the support and creativity the team has shown in helping Rosa reach these milestones.

At Anchor Center, we see every day how the right tools and the right support can unlock a child’s world. For Gael, that world is music. His mom says music is his life, and when you watch him light up at the sound of an instrument, you understand exactly what she means.

Our office manager Michael brought in his new banjo yesterday to share with Gael. With guidance from our incredible music therapist, Laura, Gael had the opportunity to explore a brand-new sound and sensation. Music brings remarkable focus and calm to Gael, and when you place an instrument in his hands, he is completely engaged.

Our teachers, therapists, and staff work together to create meaningful, sensory-rich experiences that help children with visual impairments discover their passions
and build confidence. At Anchor, music therapy is something that helps our children connect, grow, and thrive.

We were thrilled to welcome students and families from to Anchor Center for Blind Children for the second year in a row!

Students jumped right into a fun scavenger hunt, explored walkers and white canes, and learned how different ways of moving through the world can shape how we experience it. It was a meaningful opportunity for collaborative learning, new friendships, and lots of laughter.

The students spent the morning playing together on our adaptive playground, enjoying a beautiful day filled with curiosity, connection, and inclusion.

TREMENDOUS TUESDAYS: MEET ABBY

Abby first began her journey at Anchor Center when she was just a few months old and diagnosed with congenital blindness. At the time, her sense of the world around her was rapidly increasing, as was her eagerness to explore using both her hands and feet. However, there was one realm Abby was less eager to take part in: other people. She quickly became overwhelmed by multiple people talking, moving around or even touching her.

Anchor Center provided many new experiences and opportunities for her to interact with both different and familiar people and places. Over the past year and a half, Abby has become more accepting of other people moving into her space and has begun reaching out to make contact with adults and even other kids!

Abby’s journey at Anchor is far from over - she is currently mastering sitting independently and crawling in order to explore and find more things to kick and make music with. I have no doubt that she will soon be zooming down the halls of Anchor Center (with a little help from her friends and teachers)!

- Victoria, Abby's mom

Last month an Anchor alumni student, Owen Gutenplan, facilitated a blind hockey activity for Anchor preschool students as a Bar Mitzvah project to support our community! Owen was accompanied by the captain of the U.S. Blind Hockey Team, Dan Schramm and supporter Ed who are part of Visionaries Blind Hockey -a blind hockey team based out of Colorado.

Owen facilitated a meaningful and accessible hockey activity where our students practiced shooting goals and dressed up in gear, felt ice, and listened to all the sounds you would hear in a rink at the Hockey Sensory Exploration Station! We thank Owen for his bringing his passion and enthusiasm to Anchor, and congratulate him on becoming a Bar Mitzvah! And for showing us his super cool prosthetic! 🙂

If your child is interested in learning to play blind hockey, Owen and the team would love to see them out there! Please email coloradovisionaries@gmail.com

We also want to thank the Colorado Avalanche Youth Development team for the amazing swag bags!
