Happy ! This month we celebrate Black history and Black joy while also deepening our collective understanding of the harm and oppression that has shaped the experience of Black Americans throughout history–particularly when it comes to housing and healthcare.
Notwithstanding the resilience of Black communities, racist housing policies and practices have led to an over-representation of Black people in our homelessness system. Compared to 2024, in 2025 Black/African American/African Coloradans made up less of the homeless population in the Denver Metro Region (18.1% compared to 23.5%), however, they are still 3xs overrepresented in the homelessness population compared to the general population (18.1 vs. 6%), according to 2025 MDHI PIT count data.
Working to dismantle policies that prevent people from accessing fair and equitable housing is a crucial part of our work at CCH. Advocacy at the local, state, and national levels, awareness at the organization level, and cultural responsibility at the individual level are all part of CCH's mission.
