Last month, lawmakers killed the Medical Debt Protection Act, choosing hospital lobbyists over the people of Colorado. This bill would have protected thousands from abusive medical debt collection during a time when families are already struggling.

Make your disappointment heard and join the Center for Health Progress (CHP), and partners like us, at the Capitol west steps on May 8th from 11:30 AM to 1 PM for a rally to demand accountability and call out the influence of corporate lobbyists. Medical debt is one of the largest contributors to people's experience of homelessness, and this bill would have allowed for highly reasonable protections around medical debt.

CHP is hoping for a large turnout, let them know you’re coming by registering here: https://secure.everyaction.com/UkBOap-Hv0O8EY_xu7diCw2

"When the state fails to invest adequately, it effectively encourages local governments to adopt short-sighted, punitive measures that push the problem elsewhere.

This bill is not a silver bullet. It will not, on its own, end homelessness. But it represents a critical shift away from isolation and toward collaboration."

'No single jurisdiction can effectively tackle all of that alone, nor should it'

“We keep seeing the numbers of people entering the cycle of homelessness are increasing substantially. And then we’re also seeing that gap for extremely low-income households is just getting bigger and bigger.”

Colorado’s state budget proposal would cut $130 million from Proposition 123, with most of the money coming from programs that develop affordable rental housing for low-income families
