Some books don’t just inform… they move you. 🌿📖

Kim shares why Plant Medicine by Stephen Harrod Buhner has stayed close to her heart. She describes Buhner as an author who can make you laugh, make you cry, and weave poetry through his writing in a way that makes plant medicine feel deeply alive.

Alongside honoring the relationships many Indigenous and Native communities have long held with plants, this book invites a more reverent, heart centered approach to herbalism.

Kim also shares one of her favorite quotes from the book and reflects on why these teachings continue to resonate.

✨ Listen in for a beautiful reminder that plant medicine is not only about remedies, but relationship.

Martin’s Go-To Signature Scent 🌿

When it comes to creating a grounding, unforgettable natural fragrance…Martin has a favorite blend he keeps coming back to.

Rooted, warm, and subtly sensual:

✨ Vetiver
✨ Oak moss (known for its natural, pheromone-like qualities)
✨ Ylang ylang
✨ Himalayan cedarwood
✨ Vanilla

Blended into a carrier oil and placed in a roller bottle for an easy, wearable scent.

This combination creates a fragrance that is
🪴earthy
🍦slightly sweet
😌deeply calming
🧲and effortlessly magnetic

And the best part…it’s completely customizable.

Martin shares how you can adjust the blend depending on what you’re drawn to whether you want to brighten it, ground it, or shift the overall energy with additional essential oils.

No two blends have to be the same… that’s the beauty of working with plant-based scent.

Make sure to watch the full video to see all the options and how he builds each variation ✨

Because scent isn’t just about smelling good…
it’s about how it makes you feel.

Lilac Infused Honey 🌿💜

Lilac is blooming a month early, and if you’ve been near any of the trees… you already know the scent is everything.

A simple way to capture that fleeting spring energy:

Quick Recipe:
• Harvest fresh lilac blossoms from unsprayed trees
• Gently remove petals only (avoid stems and green parts)
• Lightly shake petals to remove debris, avoid rinsing to keep moisture low
• Fill an 8 to 12 oz mason jar loosely with petals (don’t pack tightly)
• Slowly pour raw honey over petals, making sure they are fully covered
• Use a clean utensil to release any air pockets
• Seal and let infuse for 3 to 4 weeks in a cool, dry place

During infusion:
• Check after 1 to 2 days and top off with more honey as petals absorb it
• Every few days, gently turn or stir the jar to keep petals coated

To finish:
• Strain out petals using a fine mesh or cheesecloth
• Store in a sealed jar and enjoy ✨

Drizzle into tea, over toast, yogurt, or anywhere you want a little hint of spring.

Nature always gives us something to work with we just have to notice it 💜

Kim loves working with Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.)—a truly heart-centered plant, supporting both the physical and emotional heart.

Vinegar is one of her favorite ways to extract it. It’s simple, effective, and alcohol-free, making it a great option for everyday use.

Hawthorn is often used to support emotional openness, stress, and overall balance.

Simple. Intentional. Heart-centered.

Sometimes the most beautiful moments are the simplest ones 🌿

A small bloom, growing right outside our doors… a reminder that nature is always offering something, if we slow down enough to notice it.

In herbalism, we learn to see the value in what’s around us. Not just in the big, obvious plants, but in the quiet ones too. The ones that support, nourish, and connect us back to the earth in a meaningful way.

There is so much wisdom in nature. And when we take the time to observe it, to understand it, we begin to deepen not only our knowledge but our relationship with it.

This is the heart of Herbalism Roots. Learning to find beauty, purpose, and healing in the world around you.

What’s something in nature you’ve noticed lately? 🌱

Martin introduces us to the different types of ginseng and how each one offers its own unique kind of support.

All of these are incredible adaptogens, meaning they help the body adapt to stress and support overall balance.

Not all ginseng works the same way. In herbalism, we look at how an herb feels in the body and choose based on what kind of support is needed.

American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is known to be more cooling.
Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) tends to be more warming and stimulating.
Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus) is considered more neutral.

Understanding these differences helps guide more thoughtful, personalized choices whether you’re working with yourself or supporting someone else.

It’s a reminder that herbalism isn’t one size fits all, it’s about learning to listen and respond to what the body needs.

🪴Internship Feature🪴

At The Urban Farm, a 20 acre space in Denver, community, education, and sustainability come together. Students and youth are involved in every step from seeding to harvest, learning how food systems work while giving back to their community. With thousands of pounds of food donated each year, the impact reaches far beyond the farm itself.

David DeMalteris plays a key role in leading this work, creating meaningful hands on learning experiences that support both people and the land.

🌼What a magical weekend at Herbalism Roots!🌺

Our Medicine Making Weekend brought together incredible students who dove deep into the art of herbal craft. They learned the percolation method of extraction, a supercharged alcohol extraction that draws out the herb’s full power in just days, to create a beautiful cinnamon (Cinnamomum spp.) percolation.

Then there was Plant Spirit Healing, one of the program’s most beloved parts. Watching the students embrace this profound practice for releasing stress, trauma, and what no longer serves them is something words can barely capture. Our students continue to inspire us every time. Every moment was pure magic.

Thai herbal compresses are bundles of Thai herbs and roots chopped into small pieces, wrapped in fabric, steam-heated to release the aromas, and then massaged into the body. Our school’s founder Hillary Hilliard was first introduced to the compresses when she was living in Thailand in 2004. For our Thai herbal compress making class the students make a traditional Thai herbal compress. Here Hillary is showing how to make one.
You can get the recipe and Hillary’s full article how Thai herbal compresses were her entry to herbal medicine on our website. Link in bio.
