What a privilege it was to contribute to a Croatian panel discussing diagnosis, support, recognition, and improved treatment for individuals with autism and eating disorders. We frequently encounter people who receive a later-in-life diagnosis of neurodivergence, and we believe more can be done to support earlier recognition and better care.

During her time as a panelist, Dr. Gaudiani highlighted new insights on neurodivergence featured in the latest edition of Sick Enough, practiced some Croatian by following the translated subtitles of fellow panelists, and yes, brought some of her signature Italian energy to the discussion (in other words, the answer is D).

Thank you to Dina Popović for the invitation, and to the other panelists for the opportunity to share knowledge and learn together.

Happy Administrative Professionals' Day to these two rays of Gaudiani Clinic sunshine! Camille and Kennedy power SO much of what makes the Clinic what it is, from being a friendly voice on the other side of a phone call to arranging calls with other team members to coordinating preauthorizations for services and medications to supporting all of the other Gaudiani Clinic team members. We're so grateful for Camille and Kennedy! You both deserve all of the days!

Dr. Gaudiani is proud to have contributed to this important article by Alli Spotts-De Lazzer, LMFT, CEDS for Medscape on acute gastric dilation, which is a potentially life-threatening medical complication that can affect individuals of any body size following an episode of binge eating.

Acute gastric dilation is a surgical emergency, yet it can present with surprisingly mild symptoms. This is a critical reminder that symptom severity does not always reflect medical risk, and that subtle warning signs should never be dismissed.

At the Gaudiani Clinic, we believe that creating a validating, shame-free environment is essential. When patients feel safe and heard, they are far more likely to openly share behaviors and symptoms -- and that openness can be life-saving.

Thank you, Alli, for bringing such vital attention to this topic. 💚

We’re so grateful to have an incredible referral network across the country to connect our patients with, and we LOVE being part of multidisciplinary teams. We learn so much by working with other clinicians, which only benefits our patients.

Kennedy is often the first friendly face or voice that our patients experience and some of the sparkly glue that holds our team together whether it's by coordinating calls with teams across the country or making that spreadsheet just a little bit cooler (because she absolutely knows how to make spreadsheets cool).

A little more about our wonderful Kennedy:

Q: What is your background?
A: I have an undergraduate degree in Psychology and English. I’ve testified at legislative meetings for increased access to mental health support and made mental health training a part of teaching education for my former school district.

Q: What’s one skill, specialty, or superpower you bring to the team?
A: I LOVE data and spreadsheets. The team has let me completely nerd out with everything data. (Nerd out anytime, Ken! We are your people.)

Q: What motivates or inspires you in your work?
A: I am constantly motivated by the wonderful people I work with. How hard they work and how much they care is endlessly inspiring.

Q: What’s something unique, fun, or surprising about you?
A: I love all of my “old lady” hobbies. I quilt, crochet, bake bread, read, and have recently gotten into embroidery and needlepoint. (Team note: she's also very talented at all of these hobbies!)

Q: How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
A: I like to watch Nuggets games and cuddle with my four cats (Jack, Archer, Alphabet, and Maggie)

Q: Coffee or tea order?
A: Spicy chai

Q: Favorite movie, show, or podcast right now?
A: The movie, Arrival, is a constant rewatch for me

Q: Favorite book?
A: The Giver is a childhood favorite. Current fave is Persuasion by Jane Austen

Q: Favorite musician/type of music/song?
A: I’m a lifelong Swiftie but will listen to just about any kind of music. Other faves are A$AP Rocky, Noah Kahan, and Penny & Sparrow

Q: Favorite snack?
A: Sour gummy bears or Nutella with pretzels

Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received about work or life?
A: Take pride in your work and if you’re going to do something, do your very best.

Thanks for being a treasured part of the team, Kennedy! 💚

In today’s Medical Minute, Dr. Das discusses the four main categories of cardiac complications affecting individuals with eating disorders. It is important to understand the distinct ways the cardiovascular system can be impacted, as many eating disorder–related fatalities are attributed to cardiovascular complications, including what we believe to be one of the key causes of death in this population: severe hypoglycemia leading to cardiac arrest.

At the Gaudiani Clinic, we enjoy working with patients affected by all of these types of cardiac complications and providing thoughtful support via both virtual and in-person care.

We're rounding out our exploration of some of the medical complications of eating disorders with the endocrine and dermatological systems. Many complications of eating disorders are interconnected such as changes in hormone levels (endocrine system) leading to bone density loss (musculoskeletal system). For this reason (and many more) a whole-person and eating disorder-aware approach is so important for all clinicians to thoughtfully use in providing care.
Out of all the medical complications covered this week, were there any complications you were surprised to see listed? Any complications you'd really like to learn more about? We'd love to hear from you!

In a continuation from yesterday, we're exploring how some of the medical complications of eating disorders show up throughout the body. Today, we're looking at cardiovascular, GI (oral and dental), pulmonary, and eye/ear presentations. Many signs and symptoms of eating disorders may not be visible, and it's important for providers to provide thoughtful and thorough exams and reviews of systems.
