This is what grief is.
A hole ripped through the very fabric of your being.
The hole eventually heals along the jagged edges that remain. It may even shrink in size.
But that hole will always be there.
A piece of you always missing.
For where there is deep grief, there was great love.
Don’t be ashamed of your grief.
Don’t judge it.
Don’t suppress it.
Don’t rush it.
Rather, acknowledge it.
Lean into it.
Listen to it.
Feel it.
Sit with it.
Sit with the pain. And remember the love.
This is where the healing will begin.

Meet Susan Johnson! Susan is our Family Service Counselor and helps people to put their own funeral plans in place.

"I began my career in the death care world in 2017. My position gives me the opportunity to build relationships through education of the many burial options and the empathy that comes from my own personal experience with loss.

In January 2015 we lost our 17-year-old son, PJ, to su***de. Being a parent surviving child loss helps me to be absolutely present with people in the wake of their sorrow. And it is truly an honor to walk with people as they find their way through grief. I help foster relationships as well between hospital staff, hospices, retirement communities and nursing homes, engaging with healthcare professionals and caregivers to provide education in the very important traditions and rituals at the time of death, as well as facilitating open discussions about grief and loss.

Not quite a native of Colorado, I’ve lived here most of my life. My husband Steve and I live in southeast Denver. We are very proud parents of our daughter, Gabrielle, a graduate of CSU and preschool teacher, and our son, PJ, who forever lives in our hearts."

If you are interested in meeting with Susan, to discuss putting your plans into place, or have questions about burial options, please call

: Death Nesting ~ The Heart-Centered Practices of a Death Doula by Anne-Marie Keppel
Recommended by FT, counselor & ADEC volunteer Kailey Bradley

When people prepare for birth, we colloquially say that they’re “nesting” in preparation for the new life on its way. However, we don’t often talk about preparing the same way for death (and we should). In this unique book, death doula and end-of-life educator Keppel provides practical information and compassionate practices that facilitate deathcare that honors the whole person. I particularly loved the chapter in this book about death being a sensory and spiritual experience. Too often, death is solely framed as a medical or physical event. However, Keppel challenges that notion, and reminds us that death is a layered experience and should be attended to holistically (emotionally, physically and spiritually). She also incorporates mindfulness and ritual into this important work with the aim of inviting our full presence. The book also offer a good index of resources at the back.

Death Nesting shares a quote by Clarissa Pinkola Estes early in the book that orients its theme — it rings true and was profound to me, “Love in its fullest form is a series of deaths and rebirths.”
This book is ideal for end-of-life care professionals, thanatologists, hospice volunteers, and also anyone who wants to provide or experience a heart-centered, gentle and good death.
