A troubling trend is on the rise, and Colorado physicians are urging the community to pay attention.

Dr. Jessica Gowing, a colorectal surgeon at HCA HealthONE Rose, is highlighting a sharp increase in colorectal cancer, particularly among younger adults. Rates in people under 55 have doubled over the past few decades, and too many are being diagnosed late — when treatment becomes more difficult.

What’s driving concern? Many younger adults don’t realize they’re at risk, which can lead to missed symptoms and delayed screening.

Dr. Gowing’s reminders for all ages:

👉 Don’t brush off symptoms
👉 Learn your family history
👉 Talk with your doctor about when to start screening (it may be earlier than you think)

Mild-to-moderate cramps can be a normal part of your menstrual cycle. But when drags on for days, disrupts work or school or makes everyday life feel overwhelming, it could be your body’s way of saying that something more is going on. This is especially true if you’re also dealing with heavy bleeding, nausea or worsening pain.

Did you know colorectal cancer screening now begins at age 45 for people at average risk?

Experts usually recommend a colonoscopy every 10 years or a flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years. Depending on your risk, other tests may be appropriate – your doctor can help determine the best option for you. Learn what to expect from each screening method: https://bit.ly/4uoeYSS

New CDC data shows adult obesity rates may be starting to level off after years of steady increases. While that’s encouraging, 40% of adults are still affected — and many families continue to face the challenges that come with obesity.

Dr. Katy Irani, bariatric surgeon at HCA HealthONE Rose, says there is hope. With greater awareness, more support resources, and expanded treatment options, people are seeing real, life-changing results: https://bit.ly/4cEQUVx

Every birth story is unique.🤰 For some moms, it may involve cesarean delivery, also known as a C-section. Doctors perform this major abdominal surgery for a variety of reasons, often related to complications during pregnancy or delivery. If you’re expecting a baby, it’s important to understand the risks and benefits of the procedure. For example, having a C-section increases the chance that you will need a C-section for future deliveries.

Each year, more than 200,000 babies are born in hospitals across our broader HCA Healthcare network. If you’re expecting and exploring your birth options – including when a C section might be recommended – finding the right obstetrician is an important first step.
