๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ‘ถ For common bacterial ear infections in young children, a watchful waiting approach may be just as effective as a typical antibiotic course.

Two studies co-led by Denver Health researchers show that most bacterial ear infections improve on their own and that when antibiotics are needed, shorter five-day courses work just as well as longer treatments.

One study supports watchful waiting, allowing time for symptoms to improve before starting antibiotics if needed. The second shows that shorter antibiotic durations are effective and come with fewer side effects.

โ€œMost ear infections resolve without antibiotics,โ€ said Timothy Jenkins, MD, a Denver Health infectious disease specialist. โ€œWhen antibiotics are needed, shorter durations are just as effective and have fewer side effects.โ€

This research reflects Denver Healthโ€™s commitment to evidence-based, family-centered care. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ’Š Today we recognize Denver Healthโ€™s pharmacists and the critical role they play in patient care.

Pharmacists review complex medication plans, counsel patients and support care teams across our system, ensuring medications are safe, effective and accessible.

We are proud to train the next generation of pharmacy professionals through Denver Healthโ€™s Pharmacy Residency and Training Program. The program supports pharmacy students from the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Regis University School of Pharmacy, who complete hands-on training in our inpatient and outpatient pharmacies.

Thank you to our pharmacists for the care you provide patients and the future you help shape through training and mentorship.

๐Ÿ’‰ With dropping national vaccination rates, trusted voices matter when it comes to protecting kids from the flu.

New research from Denver Health shows that culturally rooted storytelling, created with the community, can increase childhood influenza vaccination rates in underserved communities.

Pediatrician and researcher Josh Williams led a study published in JAMA Network Open in which caregivers who received text messages written by peers and linked to real community stories were 63% more likely to vaccinate their children compared to standard health system reminders.

Why it matters:
Flu can be serious for young children, especially in communities facing barriers to care. Building trust through shared stories can help close gaps and keep kids healthier.

๐ŸŽฅ Dr. William's was recently interviewed about the study on FOX31 KDVR.com. Watch the segment below ๐Ÿ‘‡.

Hello, Little One has officially launched! ๐Ÿ’™

On the first of the year, the program replaced Denver Healthโ€™s longtime Newborns in Need initiative, continuing a tradition of caring for families that began in 2003. Our New Yearโ€™s baby, Oulahni Cortes and her family, were the first to receive a Hello, Little One welcome bag filled with essential supplies to support a healthy start. Thanks to the support of our Patient Experience and Volunteer Services teams and the Denver Health Foundation, every family who delivers at Denver Health now receives one.

With more than 4,200 babies born at our hospital in 2025 alone, programs like Hello, Little One help ensure every newborn and family feels supported from day one.

Flu activity remains high across Colorado and the nation, and vaccination is still recommended for everyone 6 months and older who hasnโ€™t received it yet. According the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, fewer than 30% of Coloradans are currently vaccinated, a lower rate than this time last year.

Flu vaccines help reduce the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and complications. Itโ€™s not too late to protect yourself and others.

Recent federal announcements about changes to childhood vaccine recommendations have raised questions for families across the country.

In a recent Denver7 interview, Bob Belknap, MD, MPH, Chair of the Public Health Institute at Denver Health, shared concerns about the uncertainty surrounding federal vaccine guidance and emphasized the importance of independent scientific review and equitable access to vaccines.

At Denver Health, our vaccine guidance and clinical practices remain unchanged. We will continue to follow evidence, prioritize patient safety and ensure families have access to trusted, science-based care. ๐Ÿ’™
