Melasma is basically your pigment cells (melanocytes) getting overstimulated. The biggest triggers:
• Sun & heat exposure (even through windows 🚗☀️)
• Hormones (pregnancy, birth control, hormone therapy)
• Genetics (it runs in families)
• Inflammation or aggressive skincare
• Certain meds or fragrances
Heat alone—not just UV—can worsen it, which is why melasma can be so stubborn.
Who gets it most
• Women more than men
• Medium to deeper skin tones (Fitzpatrick III–V)
